Videl and I went through the deserted streets of the now ruined city, wrecked cars now sat still as they were either piled up in crashes or destroyed by the hands of the androids. Not a word was exchanged as we casually walked, making the air seem a bit awkward between my new acquaintance and I, so I tried to make some small talk.
"So... uh, how's it been surviving out here?"
Suddenly, stopping in her tracks, Videl gives me a not-so-subtle glance of annoyance as my words sit in the air for a second. Putting her hands on her hips she responds."How do you think?"
Turning around she gestures her a hand at the site of destruction that was practically the whole city at this point."This whole city is just a shell of its former self; people are left fighting over the scraps that were left in those monsters' wake, and I managed to lose the only parent I had left. So, all in all, everything is pretty shit."
Hesitating as I processed her words, realizing how much of an insensitive question it was given the circumstances. Though her comment about her parent took me by surprise.
"Sorry, I was just... never mind. Though, when you said that about your parents. Do you mean Mr. Satan died?"
"Yeah..."
Videl's disposition shifted away from her usual stoicism and annoyance to one of timidness, staring down one of the many streets around us.
"He... tried to stop the androids. Made a whole spectacle of it like I expected. I always knew my dad loved the attention of his adoring fans since he was the martial arts champ and all, but it got to his head."
"So, I'm guessing he didn't exactly heed any words of warning then?"
"No. He meant well. Wanted to give the people hope after all the loss and destruction they had went through, so he decided to do something about it. I obviously tried to deter him, told him it was a stupid idea, but all that public expectation put on him made him think he just couldn't turn away."
I pondered that for a moment. I guess it makes sense given his position. Even though this was at a point before his massive explosion of popularity thanks to him taking the credit for offing cell, he still had quite a number of loyal fans. Not to mention his whole position as a martial artist of such high regard would make him a prime candidate to try and defeat them. His personality is also that of a person who looks out for the wellbeing of others even if he can be an arrogant or cowardly man at times.
"The whole event was televised, and he made a public callout to the androids daring them to face him in the arena. I guess they got the message considering they showed up, too bad they weren't in the mood to play pretend cause they immediately attacked any spectators who had mustered up the courage to watch. Then of course came my dad."
"A whole bunch of cameras and practically the last remnants of the entire world watching him should've made him pass out just from the weight of their expectations and yet he still managed to put on a poker face. Kept talking big about they were "going down to the champ" and all that like he usually does to his opponents."
A solemn chuckle left her mouth as she looked at me with watering eyes.
