Her...
Those eyes, that body... it's beauty, if he's ever seen it. It's not like he had a chance, but, god, it still stings. She was way out of his league and he couldn't be more upset with the reality of it.
Johnathon sat in the cafeteria, doing nothing productive on his break again. Not that he usually got work done in the first place. All he did was think about her. That one time when he saw her in the grocery store, his delusions almost fed him a little too much and he nearly approached her to greet her. She didn't know him. But he knew her. Way more than he should've. He'd treat her so well... he just knew it.
His train of thought was put to a screeching halt, as she entered the cafeteria. While she was at the coffee machine and waiting, he just couldn't help but stare. As she shifted her weight, he turned his head so fast, he almost got dizzy from it. Being caught staring would definitely ruin his chances, if he had any.
Though she didn't drink coffee. She just didn't like the taste. While she wondered whether she'd get hot cocoa or hot chocolate, she noticed one of her co-workers sitting alone at a nearby table, starring at her.
After she bought herself a hot beverage, she began walking towards his table.
After the initial few seconds of staring, he managed to look away before suddenly noticing her approach.
-Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit, shit-
He began to fumble with his glasses, trying to hide his nervous eyes behind them. His heart was beating out of his chest, not helping his attempt at seeming calm.
He just hoped she wouldn't say anything about his obvious state of anxiety upon seeing her so close. He'd die of embarrassment if she realized how much he liked her.
When she reached him she looked at him with an awkward smile.
“Uhm... Good afternoon. I noticed you looking at me. Is there some problem?” She asked, awkwardness laced in her noticeable british accent.
-Oh dear god, that voice-
He was too busy having a heart attack to even think of a good lie to tell her, as he choked out a shaky response.
“N-n-no, no! I-uh... I was just... I... thought I recognized you from somewhere...”
-You idiot-
She did a quick scan of his person – a tall, boxy figure with a hunched-over and nervous demeanour, long dark hair and a scraggly beard, deep-set brown eyes behind square frames, a lab coat loosely hung on his shoulders that vaguely obscured his Hawaiian-print t-shirt and khaki shorts.
-Shit, this loser-look is definitely doing it for me way too well-
“Well... I published a book about an year ago.” She tried to guess where he could know her from.
-Damn, how much of a dumbass can one man be-
“O-oh! Yeah I think I read your book! The uh...” He paused, trying to think of the name of the book. He had read it, but he was so stressed he couldn’t really remember the name.
“The...” He started to panic at his idiocy and how ridiculous it must seem. “… the- uhm… book about... something..”
She smiled to herself at his attempt to remember the name. “'Mycology: study of the fungi'.” She helped him.
When she smiled at him he damn near melted into his seat.
-That smile…-
He was definitely going to have a mental breakdown after this.
