LUCY

Tim left a while ago. So did Angela. Nolan offered to stay to keep us company, but I told him that we'd be okay. I would've liked for him to stay, but there were a few reasons that I told him no. For one thing, even though we've assured Emiliana that he is safe, I want her to feel as comfortable as possible. Another thing is that I know how much Bailey needs him right now. This whole situation has made our shift run longer than normal, so he's already late coming back home. I don't know if he's had much of a chance to let her know.

Crime scene processing still hasn't arrived, and someone needs to stay here until they do to ensure that the scene isn't messed with. So I figured that I might as well stay. Besides, if nothing else, it gives me more time to figure out how we can help Emiliana and Mia.

11:14 am - SEBASTIAN: I'm a few minutes out.

11:15 am - ME: Okay, see you soon.

"Momma!" Mia says. "I scared."

Although she doesn't really understand what's going on, Mia knows that something is happening. She knows that a lot of bad stuff happened. She has heard everything, and seen a lot of it, so without the context of actually understanding any of it, it's gotta be that much scarier for her.

"I know, sweetie. But your friend Lucy is here and she's going to keep us safe,"

"Home?"

"What do you mean?" I ask.

Emiliana sighs sadly. "I think she knows that something is wrong with our home. She's wondering what is going to happen with it."

"Ah," I nod.

11:17 am - SEBASTIAN: I'm here. Do you want me to come in?

11:17 am - ME: Yes, please. But be gentle. Men scare her.

11:17 am - SEBASTIAN: Why?

11:18 am - SEBASTIAN: Oh, wait, was she-

11:18 am - ME: Yeah.

11:19 am - SEBASTIAN: That's awful.

11:19 am - SEBASTIAN: I'll be very calm and gentle when I come in.

"My brother is coming, I hope that's okay,"

"Is he safe?" Emiliana asks.

"Yes, he's safe. I promise."

11:20 am - ME: Okay, you're good to come on in.

I smile warmly at Emiliana, hoping to bring her a little comfort. She seems to relax, only a little, but at least it's something.

The door opens and Sebastian walks in with the crayons. The second that the two make eye contact, they both look equally surprised to see each other.

"Emi?"

"Seb?"

They rush to give each other a friendly hug.

"Uh, what's going on here?" I ask.

"Seb and I dated in college," Emiliana explains, but it only leaves me more confused.

"What? But I thought-"

"No, no, I am gay. She was kind of when I realized that I was," Sebastian says. "My gay awakening, if you will."
