September 2, 1977 - Friday
Leonora sat beside Thalia and Illyria at breakfast, the three of them separated from the rest of their house to keep their conversation private. Thalia had spent the entire evening before teasing them with hints about the private exchange she had with Bellatrix and Rodolphus before boarding the train. She'd refused to share exact details, promising to reveal them come morning.
So now, the three girls sat huddled together, Thalia nestled in the middle, her voice barely above a whisper as both girls leaned in.
"Bella told me," she began, her eyes gleaming, "that the Dark Lord will be visiting Lestrange Manor over the Winter holidays." She let the words settle before continuing. "She said... he's very interested in recruiting me.
Illyria let out a soft gasp as Leonora's eyes narrowed with a mix of awe and unease.
"You two know what this means, don't you?" Thalia's voice dropped further, thick with excitement. "If I impress him, really impress him, I could be marked as early as this summer." Her grin widened, a giddy squeal slipping past her lips.
Leonora's eyes widened. She quickly glanced around the table, making sure that no one had heard. Perhaps discussing the Dark Lord in the Great Hall wasn't the best idea.
Her thoughts ran wild. A Death Eater? At sixteen? She was still a child, surely the Dark Lord didn't recruit children... did he? How would they be able to serve him? They couldn't legally use magic outside of Hogwarts yet.
"Congratulations, Thalia," Illyria whispered. "I know how badly you've wanted this."
"Don't you think you're a little young to become a Death Eater?" Leonora asked carefully, a frown tugging at her lips. "We're still in school. What if someone sees your mark? You could be expelled, or worse."
Thalia shot her a sharp look, all trace of excitement vanishing. "I will proudly bear my Dark Mark, Leonora," she sneered. "And one day, you will too." She narrowed her eyes, a glint of suspicion flashing through them. "Unless... you're having second thoughts?"
Leonora vigorously shook her head, forcing a nervous laugh. "Of course not. I was just... planning on waiting until after I graduated. I doubt the Dark Lord would be interested in me yet, anyway."
"Are you kidding me, Nora?" Thalia scoffed, flipping her hair over one shoulder. "You're one of the brightest witches of our generation, of course he'd be interested in you. I could always put in a good word over Christmas, if you'd like."
Leonora grimaced, the thought making her stomach twist. That's very generous of you, Thalia. Really. But... I think it would be best if I waited a little longer."
