It woke me up in the middle of the night.

I remember it clearly. The pain was just like what everyone said it would be like. I turned my bedside lamp on and looked down at my left wrist.

It was one letter. Black and inked in cursive. They said that sometimes people would get all of the letters of their soulmates name at one time. It meant that they're closer to meeting their other half.

Others, like myself apparently, would get one at a time. It meant that it would be a little bit longer until I met the person who I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with.

L.

That's was what was on my wrist.

I felt sort of a relief. I had been panicking lately that there wasn't anyone out there in the world for me. That I would live my life alone while everyone else found the person they were supposed to be with.
I stared at the letter for a while until I was able to go back to sleep.

....
I woke up the next morning to my mom calling my name. I looked at my clock next to me and saw that it was 7 am. I had to be at school for 8:30.

I went to a private high school, St. Bart's. It was a prestigious school with students who were anything but innocent.

I was among those that were actually innocent. I didn't party a lot, didn't drink nor smoke. I kept my head buried in books but I did have friends that were the opposite of me.

I guess that you could say that we balanced each other out.

"Helena! Are you awake?" My mom yelled for me again. I got out of bed and went downstairs.

"How could I not be? I think you woke the neighbors." I said as I walked into our kitchen.

My mom was there along with my dad, and my cousin, Lucy. She was my age and lived with my family after she lost her parents to a fire six years ago.
Her dad, my mom's brother, and her mom were trapped in their home when a fire from a candle broke out. Lucy was spending the night with me when the tragedy happened.

My parents took her in and she's been like my sister ever since.

"You could sleep all day if we let you, Lena." My dad said as he laughed. He tugged my ponytail as he walked by me.

"Well you should let me." I mumbled as I sat down next to Lucy.

She was eating cereal and looking at something on her phone. Lucy met her soulmate two months ago. His name was Derrick and he went to school with us.

They didn't notice each other until the day their names were completely spelt out on their wrists.

Our school was fairly big so it took them a while to find each other. But ever since they did, they've been inseparable. They were really cute together and I was so glad that they found each other.

I grabbed a spare bowl and fixed myself some cereal too.

"Woah, look at that!" I felt Lucy grab my wrist to look at it.

I had almost completely forgotten that the mark was there. I wasn't used to it just yet.

That's when I felt more pain. I watched as a "u" appeared.

"Oh my! Honey, come see!" My mom was standing behind my chair and called for my dad.

Everyone looked at my wrist that now had "Lu" in cursive black ink.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you came home from school today with a soulmate, Lena." My dad patted my shoulder.

I didn't want to tell them that I was nervous. I just wanted to know who it was already.

....
I was almost late to school since my parents wanted to talk to me about the whole soulmate thing. I wished they wouldn't make it such a big deal, but then I thought about how big of a deal it actually was.

This was the person that I was supposed to be with for the rest of my life.

I hurried in the front doors of the school and saw that there were still people in the halls. We had to wear uniforms to school which I was sort of okay with.
It made me have less time to worry about what I was going to wear every morning.

Girls had the choice to wear skirts, khaki or navy, or shorts of the same color. Our school had polos with the logo that they sold each year. The color choices were maroon or white.

Guys wore pants or shorts of the same color with the same polos as us. We could wear whatever shoes we wanted. Normally I wore converse or flats.

I made it to my locker and grabbed my books for first period.

"Lena Flores!" I heard my name being shouted from someone. It had to be a friend of mine since only my friends and family called me, Lena. Everyone else called me Helena.

I turned and saw my best friend Calum Hood. He was the typical jock, but wasn't a complete asshole. He and I had been friends for a few years.

"Morning Cal." I greeted him as he gave me a small hug. I held out my wrist for him to see, "Look what happened."

"Shut up! Mine still hasn't came yet." He looked at my wrist for a few seconds before looking at his own.

"Well, I'm royally freaking the hell out. I'm so close to seeing him that I'm getting myself nervous." I closed my locker and we started to walk to class.

Calum swung an arm around my shoulders, "It's going to be okay. Remember what happened to my sister? She got a few letters one night and then it was almost a month before she met Jason."

"You're right. It probably won't even be today."
Calum walked me to my class before making his way to his. I sat at the front in my chemistry class. I needed to or else I would be distracted at what everyone else in the class was doing.

My teacher, Ms. Garcia, started the lesson but halfway through it, I felt more pain on my wrist.

I tried to hide the look on my face by looking down. After it was receded, I turned my wrist over to see what appeared. It was the letter K.

LUK.

"Miss Flores? Do you mind running to the office and dropping off the attendance sheet?" Ms. Garcia asked me after she assigned work for us to do.

"No ma'am. I don't." I told her. She handed me the paper and I left the class room.

I made my way to the office and as soon as I opened the door, pain shot up my arm. I gasped and I heard someone else gasp too.

I looked up and saw a guy wincing in pain. He was the only one there. He was seated by the principal's office. He looked up at me and then the pain went away.

My wrist felt ice cool and I saw the name that was left.

Luke

"Helena?"
