NOVAS POV
I peered outside the balcony window watching as a plethora of luxury cars, mafia members, family members, and random people I never knew existed came in and out of the estate.
This was really happening.
I'd be an actual mafia boss in a little under an hour.
It honestly felt odd. Today as a whole felt odd, like something was off.
But maybe I was sabotaging myself. This all felt weird probably because this was everything Donovan was supposed to have.
It's not like it mattered anymore, though it's not like I was getting out of this.
If anything I'd be in deeper.
I turned on my heel away from the balcony, heading back to my full length mirror to finish putting my outfit together. As I began buttoning the white dress shirt I had on, my door slightly glided open.
"Party people!" my mom cheered doing a little dance as she walked toward me. "What's wrong?" she suddenly questioned, noticing the expression on my face.
I shook my head, "It's nothing, this is just my regular everyday expression." I said blankly.
I watched through the mirror as she sat on my bed, "No it's not, you're more grim than usual." she pointed out but I remained silent.
She suddenly stood up from the bed, "You skipped a button, let me help you."
I turned to face her and she unbuttoned the shirt, "You're hiding something." she determined.
"What do you mean? I'm just keeping my thoughts to myself." I clarified and she shook her head.
"Tell me what's on your mind." she said, keeping her tone soft.
I internally sighed, "I'm scared." I finally admitted. My feelings just felt all over the place, and they were all mixing together making it hard to decipher which is which.
But what I was feeling right now– wasn't fear.
I was scared because I didn't know what this was.
She tugged on my now fully buttoned shirt, "I know you're going to do great, and although mistakes are inevitable, you're going to do the best you possibly could while being the best overall." she reassured, but my nerves still felt jumbled.
If my mom couldn't help me then the only person I had left, was myself.
Which wasn't necessarily a good thing.
"Okay." I murmured, as she leaned towards the bed to grab something.
"You know this is the tie your father wore on his big day." She said hooking the material around my collar.
I hummed in response, completely zoning out.
"-Nova?" my mom said lightly, grabbing my shoulders.
"You need to calm your nerves," she said with a look of worry painted all over her face, "I know what could help you."
She grabbed my hand, before leading me out of my room, into the huge kitchen. "Big day smoothie?" she questioned.
I stared at her in deep thought, knowing it was most likely going to make my stomach hurt, "Okay." I said giving in.
She grabbed a multitude of ingredients out of the fridge and I went to lay on my couch.
I plopped down on the cushions trying to push that growing feeling away.
I couldn't tell what this was coming from, I've never been this worried before. It's like there's a pit in my stomach which is growing by the second for no apparent reason.
Soon enough my mom was crouching in front of me with the light green drink in her hand, "Here's–"
"I love her." I blurted out, unintentionally cutting her off.
Her brows immediately raised and I softly closed my eyes. "I'm in love with Mariah" I murmured into the pillow and a few seconds of silence followed.
"You could definitely tell." my mom said, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Have you told her yet?"
And I shook my head remembering earlier. "I almost did this morning." I admitted.
"What happened?" she questioned.
All my worries seemed to come flooding back to me, "What if she doesn't feel the same?" I reopened my eyes.
"You wouldn't know until you tell her." she softened her gaze.
And although she wasn't able to soothe my nerves about what was happening in less than an hour, she was able to help me with Mariah in some way.
"Drink this really fast, we have to head down, it's going to be starting soon." She said placing the glass cup in my hand.
I quickly drank the fruity drink, and headed down with my mom.
As soon as I got off the elevator the estate was extremely crowded.
I had no idea why they were in here when the actual event was outside. But before I could make my way to the backyard I noticed Donovan chatting with some people.
He clearly noticed me too, because she shot me an unreadable look. I couldn't tell what his intentions were.
But one thing I knew was that he wasn't on the invite list at all.
I broke my stare away from him, when my mom nudged my shoulder, "Go talk to some family members, you need to say hi before you go up."
I nodded my head, walking away from the area Donovan was in, hopefully I could find some family who have yet to be tainted by Donovan's voice.
I cut one of the many corners on the first floor, feeling somebody collide with me.
I lifted my gaze up almost immediately to the unrecognizable man crouching in front of me.
"This can not be the third— no way." he cut himself off as he fully lifted his gaze.
"Nova?!" Zane called out almost immediately and a smile broke out on my lips.
A squeal fell from his lips as he jumped up and down repetitively. "I haven't seen you since last year!" He said, gripping my shoulders.
"You were here three weeks ago—"
He pressed his finger to my lips, "Shhh, that's what they want you to think." he said and I chuckled.
"I could barely recognize you with the beard, what's going on with that?" I questioned.
"Noah told me the girls in Spain love beards so you know," he explained playfully nudging me. "Enough of me, you're about to be a business owner in like fifteen minutes."
"Correct,"
"How does it feel?" he asked, but as soon as I went to respond, my mouth closed almost immediately.
I didn't really know.
"Must be amazing if you're speechless." he joked, noticing my sudden silence.
"Well you know, it's always something new." I replied blankly.
Zane was cut off when Amos appeared, "Excuse me, your presence is requested outside Nova." he said, nodding to Zane.
"Go ahead and do your graduation speech, I'll catch up with you after."
I nodded, following behind Amos through the now cleared out building as the unknown feeling in my body spread.
Here goes nothing.
