I reached for her once again to no avail, but I wouldn't lose hope so early on. One more try aanndd.
"Gotcha."

CRASH
_______________

Well crashing the whole front of your car into the rail guard was fun. Now what use was getting a head start if you were just stranded?
Fuck. We are so fucked C/n, do you even have a single clue?

On the bright side no one was injured apart from the car of course. Y'know what? I'll just try start it again.

Well that worked out well. The engine just spluttered at first but as Y/n kept turning the key again and again, smoke began to put out from the hood.
______________

Now came time to wait for rescue and praying that the humans would reach you before the... uhh monsters? Before the monsters do.

Only a short time had passed when you saw the first car.
"Please help!" You shouted as you waved your arms about. Was salvation really here already?

Unlucky. After slowing down to assess your situation the man just drove away without a look back.
Oh well some people are dicks but there's no need to worry, more people will be leaving soon.

But what you did need to worry about was the night. The sun had begun to set and you knew nightfall would come soon.
______________

Remaining camouflage during the night was your safest option. The fact is dangerous characters come out to play under the cover of darkness and out here there wouldn't be many, if any people that could help you at all. We all know that you and your knives can be easily overpowered.

Nightfall came like expected, you reclined the backseats and unrolled your sleeping bag across the reclined backseat. This way you won't be immediately visible. And with C/n curled by your feet you drifted off eventually, some time into the wee hours.
_____________

Well the night passed better than you'd expected, with nothing unexpected occurring at all. Now that the sun had risen, it was time to wait again.

Sure enough people began driving past your wrecked car within the hour. Not many had stopped to even consider helping you and your companion, but those who did make some time for you turned around and left once they discovered your car was not in working condition.

Hope was not lost, it couldn't be, today was only the first of what could be many and you had a decent supply to last the two of you. Looters did pose a threat though, your stash could be raided in the event that it was discovered, but hopefully that wouldn't have to be a worry.
________________

For once C/n seemed to understand the gravity of our current predicament as she stayed quite still in my arms, not making any attempts to wriggle away.

The sun was risen and you'd assume it must be past noon. You waved for help with one arm still clutching your beloved in the other. The approaching black jeep pulled over and out stepped a man. Inside the jeep was a young boy and a woman you assumed to be his mother.

"Afternoon. What seems to be the problem?" The man said.
"I've crashed my car into that metal trail and now it won't start."

Three little boy seemed to have interest in your cat judging by the looks of the concession he was having.
"Mind if I take a look?" The man asked.
"Of course, go ahead. I'm Y/n."
"Shane."
"Your boy can come meet my cat if he wants, she doesn't bite." You continued glancing through the untinted windows.
"Oh no he's not mine but it does seem like he's taken an interest. Carl" he called, motioning for him to come over.
"Sorry for assuming" you chuckled.
"It's all good. Hey Carl did you wanna met this kitty?" He nodded shyly and C/n seemed to like him.

"Hey listen, you're cars in pretty bad shape there's nothing I can do."
"No worries, thanks anyway. "
"Hey, how bout you come with us we got a camp not too far from here, couple other people as well. "
"Oh that sounds lovely, are you sure?"
"Wouldn't be a problem, long as you got some kinda livin arrangement."
"Perfect! I've got a tent and everything in my trunk." And with that you went to grab your belongings and left C/n with Carl who you already deemed to be a trustworthy caretaker.
______________

Over the next few days you settled in along with the other camp members who arrived to the quarry. Life was going pretty well. You couldn't help but notice two families that stood out. The brothers Daryl and Merle who, quite frankly scared you. But they did their part by doing the hunting. And also Carol and her horrible most likely abusive husband Ed. What made it worse was their young daughter, she must've been around the same age as Carl.

You'd handed out some of your supplies as a way of thanks. C/n took most of the spotlight though, she was more of a people person than you'd ever be but that's why we were a good match, we balanced each other out.

Okay. I know this isn't really 28 days later but I'm still keeping it. Next chapter will have a lot of Daryl I promise.
