ESSENCE MARIE DEVORE
Essence was on the way to her new parent's house. She hasn't been there since she was 3 so it was a change of scenery from Georgia.
They lived in Acres Homes. It was the ghetto but it had its parts. You could see houses old and small, but also new houses, very modern and close together. It was weird but she just guessed they were trying to bring up the area.
She couldn't talk so her parents haven't said much. They let her know where they were going and that was pretty much it.
When they arrived it was 3 cars in the driveway. She just guessed they had company. Walking in the house she was welcomed by a small group of people. The house had a very good aroma and she knew they had cooked. She hadn't eaten anything because she just didn't have an appetite so she was relieved.
" Hey baby I'm your grandma. I wanted to do this big ole get-together but I know you're very new to this. I'm family Essence your REAL family. I'm not going to hurt you. I am going to respect your boundaries though because I know it takes time." Her grandma said slightly smiling.
Essence nodded her head in agreement slowly walking into a couple more faces.
" Okay, Essence this is your older brother Dcode and your little sister Lelani." Her father said making them reach their hands out.
She pushed their hands away and gave them a warm embrace. All the memories came flowing back.
14 YEARS AGO
" ESSENCE MARIE AND DCODE AMIR DEVORE STOP RUNNING AROUND MY HOUSE NA" Essence and Dcode's mama screamed while rubbing her pregnant belly.
The two were playing a game of tag and Dcode was it. This was their favorite game to play together and pass the time by. Neither of them was registered into school it was the summer time Essence was too young and Dcode had just turned 5 that May.
The front door opened and they heard their dad's voice. The two ran into the closet their favorite hiding spot.
" Essenceeeeee Dcodeeeeeee where are you I'm back from work," their dad said jokingly. He knew they weren't going to come out from their hiding spot they liked for him to find them. It was funny to them.
He creeped his way to their usual hiding spot slowly opening the door to reveal the little kids trying to hide behind clothes.
" I found you!" He yelled picking them both up. They screamed with excitement together. " How did you find us, Daddy? We always hide so well it's not fair!" Essence said laughing. She was young but she talked well. She could make full sentences and she knew her ABCS.
" Yea you're a cheater," Dcode said rolling his eyes. Their dad just laughed and walked them to the kitchen where their mom was.
" Alright, y'all gone play outside while I finish cooking. Dcode watch your sister boy!" she said pinching his cheek.
They ran outside hip and hip to go ride their scooters. After a while Essence got tired. Dcode still had more energy than ever before though." Dcode pweaseeee get me a popsicle pweaseee U get one too ok" she asked trying to do the puppy face.
"I'll go get it just don't leave stay where you at otay?"
" Otay," she said nodding.
Not too long after a van rode past slowly. It was all black, with no tags, and windows blacked out. The door swung open and young Essence was dragged in.
" Hurry up and go, this bitch gone feel my pain." Zamora's twin sister hastily said.
A cloth was put over young Essence's face and she was knocked out instantly. When she woke again all she could remember after that was pain. I guess she stood on her word.
PRESENT TIME Essence's face was full of tears. She couldn't even express how she felt. She was so frustrated. All the memories she had shoved deep down came back up.
Her hatred for the woman she once thought was her mother was growing. She wasn't a killer but something had to be done. She wanted her to feel the pain she had been feeling for 14 years day in and day out.
She hadn't even had her first boyfriend. She didn't go to homecoming. She never had any friends. Her prom was coming up, her body was all fucked up and she couldn't even talk so she was going to miss out on that too. She was grateful they found her but her life was missing all these pieces and she was struggling to think of a plan to put them together.
She was shaken out of her thoughts by her brother breaking the hug. Fuck trusting them she loved them, and her getting her memories back made this experience so much easier.
" Just know I love you, sis I got you we gone get through this ight?," Dcode said smiling. She could already feel the love from within.
She was walked to her room and it was all decorated. She didn't know how they knew her favorite color, or how she wanted it decorated but she couldn't ask so she was just happy to have her own space.
" You like it?" Her father Amir asked nervously. She nodded in agreement pulling him into a hug.
" Alright baby just relax and enjoy your privacy we are going to get you settled in soon I want you in therapy and talking before anything else so don't stress about it."
He walked out of the room closing the door behind him and she lay in her bed turning her TV on so she could listen to music and fall deep in her thoughts.
She wanted to be normal. She wanted to move past all this and live her life! She decided within herself that she was getting over this. She knew it would take time but she wasn't going to sit and mope about it. She had been inside all her life she was going to go experiment and experience. Not too long after her thoughts sleep followed and she dosed off.
