============================

The house looked quite old. The lawn was sprawled with plants that spilled over the fence. The windows looked like it could break any moment.

Jake stopped the car in front of the tiny rusted gate. Emily and Kaylee emerged from the back seats. Emily took a huge breath to calm herself before walking in front towards the house.

Kaylee and Jake followed her from behind closely. Jake assessed the surroundings. The neighborhood itself looked quite dark and eerily quiet, except for the kids skating around. One kid almost bumped into Jake.

"Careful, kid" Jake gently stopped the kid. The kid, in turn, looked at him with an unamused look.

"Who are yall? What d'ya want?" The kid asked. Jake assessed the kid. The kid looked like he was in his pre-teens. He wore a sleeveless vest with a trouser that looked torn and faded. His hair was a mess, to say the least. It looked like it was untouched for months.

Jake cleared his throat.

"Is this Kane's house?"

The boy looked at the house before shrugging. "Yeah. That dude was just released a couple of weeks ago. Man has not left his house since."

Jake looked back at the house. The kid touched Jake's leg to call him. Jake looked back at the kid with a hum.

"Got a couple of dollars? I'll help y'all..that dude is nuts..he's not in the right state of mind."

Jake ushered Emily and Kaylee to not knock on the door. Emily furrowed her eyebrows as she look at Jake and back at the door.

Jake pulled a couple of notes and handed it to the boy. "Take us to him."

The kid smirked as he took the notes before shoving them in his pocket and walking confidently towards the front door.

"Kane? You in there buddy?" The boy yelled. They heard the shuffling of footsteps before the door opened. And there he stood.

He looked a lot worse than before. His hair and beard was unkempt and looked dirty. His eyes were bloodshot and his lips looked cracked. His fashion sense was not the best, Kaylee thought as she looked at the man. He furrowed his eyebrows, annoyed, as he looked at the trio before looking at the boy.

"What the fuck do you want? And who are these people? If you want me to hide them from police, scram away right now." His voice was dry and parched.

"Nothing to do with me, man. They wanted to meet'cha." The boy then left the three of them and walked away.

Kane looked up to look at the three of them. He furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at Emily.

"I've seen you somewhere..." He closed his eyes as he tried to remember. His eyes snapped open as he realized who it was. He glared at Emily. "Aren't you that bitch's best friend? What does she want now?"

Emily took a deep breath to calm herself down. "We want to talk with you, Kane."

Kane growled as he held onto the door tightly. "And what if I don't?"

Jake sighed. He pulled out a newspaper clipping from his pocket. "Isn't this your present girlfriend?"

The newspaper read a story about how a girl was found dead along the riverside, strangled to death last week and how the police are still searching for the killer.

Kane's eyes widened as he looked at Jake. "W..who are you? What do you want from me?" Kane's palms began to sweat and his voice trembled as he talked.

Jake chuckled before tucking the newspaper clipping back into his pocket. "If you help us, I'll not inform the police..or else..." He smirked as he looked at Kane.

Kane tried to regain his composure as he accusingly pointed at Jake. "T..That was not me...How do you know? Are you one of Reynold's guys? Did he send you here?" His voice trembled as his fear became vivid.

Jake placed a hand on his shoulder as he gently pushed him inside and entered his house.

"We just want you to co-operate and we'll let you go." He sat down at one of the chair.

The room was a mess, with clothes and clutter scattered everywhere. The unmade bed had tangled sheets and blankets thrown haphazardly across it. Papers and miscellaneous items were stacked on every flat surface, creating a chaotic and disheveled atmosphere. A faint stale odor lingered in the air, and a film of dust covered every available surface.

Drug paraphernalia, such as syringes, pipes, and empty bottles, were scattered across the room. The walls and surfaces were stained with various substances, creating a grimy and unhygienic atmosphere. The once white curtains now had a yellow tinge, and the carpet was stained with burnt marks. The entire room reeked of sweat, decay, and despair, a reflection of the addiction that had taken over his life.

Jake cleared his throat. "Do you know who Rachel is?"

Kane immediately went serious. "How can I not? After what she did to me?". Emily looked at Kane with disdain in her eyes.

"Well, she's in a bit of a pickle. And you're our number one suspect." Jake crossed his legs as he drummed his fingers on the armrest.

Kane laughed mockingly. "And what is it? Did she get arrested?"

Jake chuckled. "I'm afraid that's not the case. She's dead."

Kane looked genuinely surprised as he looked at Jake. "What do you mean she's dead?" His surprise turned into an amused smile as he chuckled . "Well, serves her right for what she did to me."

Emily growled "Shut up or I'll report to the police right now." Kane chuckled, amused, as he walked towards Emily.

"Oh? Now you're threatening me? I swear, I feel so scared" He pretended to be scared before erupting into laughter. He went back to Jake.

"Look here, dude. That bitch snitched me to the police and that's that. I've never heard about her since then."

"Then what about the comment you posted six months ago?" Kaylee showed the said post in front of Kane who peered into the phone.

"I must have been high or something. I don't remember writing it." Kane shrugs before pulling out a cigarette and placed it between his teeth.

Jake smirked as he got up and snatched the cigarette from his teeth and dropping it down. He crushed the cigarette with his foot and towered over Kane.

"That will not be a suitable excuse to tell to the police, don't you think?"

Kane glared at Jake. "I said I did not kill anyone. Neither my ex, nor my girlfriend. It must have been Reynold. That guy will kill anyone who meddles with his business. He's my boss. One of the biggest drug dealers in this city. An underground mafia."

Emily shuddered at his words. She remembered how Rachel had tried to stop Kane from doing drugs. What if they were the ones to kill her? What if they had already tried to do something. What if they do something to her? Several questions revolved around her mind. Yet, she had no answers. The more she tried to get explanations, the more questions she got.

She needed closure. And answers.
