Protect not possess.
Bolster refusing powerlessness.
A lifetime sacrificed,
Finally shielded.
Put yourself in harm's way,
Rather than risk me in the fray.
Split second reaction,
Instinctive without logic or reflection.
Deeper than apparent danger,
Aware of the panic beneath.
Physical risk passed,
Wrap me in warmth and tell me to breathe.
Not out of jealousy or control,
Until need arises almost acting as stranger.
Content to watch me thrive,
Makes me think this could stand the test of time.
Dignified respect at the core,
Worthy of being adored.
True vulnerability no longer a threat,
Know you will safeguard it.
After being forced and used as the punching bag,
Unsure how to receive without price tag.
Heart aches thinking how naturally it comes.
When own father would shove & run.
Guilt-ridden when kiss triggers freeze or flight,
Subconscious freshly processing ruthless nights.
Breathing heavy,
Once again solid embrace keeping steady.
Whether the storm is internal or ex,
Confident you're beside to weather it.
Void of record or entitlement,
Shielding, no room for ambivalence.
