Amaris POV

I have never been the one to complain or wallow in self pity. As a matter of fact, I was probably the problem solver in my station in the pack. Living in the unmarried females cabin, I have never had a consistent home life. The older females cared for the younger ones. As the older ones mated,  they left me behind.

I am the only orphan in the pack, so I have no ties, no lineage, nothing. I am insignificant. My rank is even at question. I am what is known as a latent wolf, having reached my 21st birthday without having ever shifted. I feel her and see her inside me. We talk, but she refuses to shift. Not even the Alpha commands can get her to surface. That was a shock to everyone.

So with my status and lack of family, I am very withdrawn and keep to myself; which is unusual for a wolf. Normally we are very communal creatures who enjoy touch and companionship. I just never had that connection with any of my pack.

"Amaris, come to my office to see me." Alpha Black linked me. He is a kind Alpha that really cares about the pack. So I immediately drop my work and head to his office.  I am one of the advanced trainee healers in the medical office.

"Yes Alpha! On my way." I answered back. Upon arrival, I knocked at the big wooden door.

"Come in, Amaris. Sit down." He motioned to one of the guest chairs across from him. In the other chairs sat Beta Rodgers and Dr. Shannon. I sat down obediently and waited for them to speak.

"Amaris, as you are aware that we have tried to get your wolf to appear." Alpha Black said. I nodded in agreement. "I have gone over your medical file again." He points to the thick file on his desk. "Just to refresh, we have no medical history on you, Amaris. You are a foundling. No one knows your ancestry. The pack doctors have done thorough exams of you over your years here. And, have found no physical or mental reason as to why you are latent. Your wolf is present with you, she just has not made herself physical." He continued.

"That is correct Alpha. Zoe speaks to me and advises me. She helps me heal from injuries quickly. She just doesn't come out. I don't know why and I don't know if she knows why. She doesn't talk about it." I advised.

"Well, you are 21 years old now." Alpha Black resumed, "And we feel it would be beneficial to send you to the Annual All Packs Mating Meet & Greet. We are hopeful that since your wolf is present, you will be able to sense your mate and she might present herself. What are your thoughts on that, Amaris?

I was stunned. "Alpha, I didn't think I was eligible to go due to my latent condition?"

"Again, we feel it might boost your wolf to socialize. It says here in your medical records that you are a very reclusive human, due in part to being an orphan. We think it will be good for you." Alpha reiterated. "If you're reading this on teenfic site or similar ones, you're reading on a mirror site. "That's right, Amaris." Dr. Shannon interjected. "All the signs point to a healthy wolf. We just need to encourage both of you to be more social. Even if your mate doesn't appear this year. I think it would help you to go to the gathering and have some fun."

"We have sent in your application to the council, along with medical records as to your wolf's existence, and you have been conditionally approved." Alpha Black beamed.

"What's the condition?" I whispered.

"Should you meet your mate, he would be notified of your latent condition. He would have the legal right of refusal to mate you for this condition." He sighed. "However, don't let that discourage you. Should that happen, there are many avenues to go forward. And, second chance mates are always a possibility. So what do you say?

I looked at the three of them. Dr. Shannon beamed at me. "I think this is a wonderful opportunity for you sweetie." She said, "I hope you take it."

Alpha Black added, "Should you find your mate, and move to the pack where he lives, you are given an economical car and a generous monthly stipend that will be directly deposited into your pack account for one year. This is something we do for all mates, especially females. It will ensure that you're independent and safe should you encounter problems with your mate and need to return home. If your mate follows you here, you do your jobs and we will take care of everything as always. What do you say, Amaris? Up for an adventure?"

"Why not?" I swallowed loudly. "It appears I have nothing to lose." Famous last words?
