Amaris POV
My eyes snap open. I am shaking, my heart pounding, covered in a sheen of cold sweat. Sitting up I look around the room. I see no signs of Jeni or her deranged mother. Stumbling to the bathroom, I look in the mirror slowly, cautiously, not sure of what fresh héll awaits me. Shockingly, I find no wounds nor blood. I raise my hands, unbelievably, they are unmutilated. No knife protrudes from my chest. The late day sun shines through the window, falling upon my unmarred face, washing away the last shadows of terror. Taking a deep breath, I turn on the faucet and splash cool water on my face. Drying with the hand towel, I sink to the floor, weak and shivering. My goddess, that was a nightmare. It is a warning, but is it also a key to my past?
Shaking the last vestiges of horror off, I take a shower, dress and join Luna Wright and Devi in the living room of the suite. "You are looking better today, Amaris." Luna Wright comments. "Have your wounds healed?"
I touched the front of my blouse to feel the remaining marks on my chest. "Yes. I am all healed with the exception of some angry red lines that I hope will go away completely over time." I sit on the couch beside Luna Wright.
I was thankful for her and the nanny for taking such good care of Devi while I was incapacitated. They stayed right here in the suite with her, as every time I woke up for any reason, they were right there with her. They even brought me food trays.
"Good." She patted my knee. "The authorities came this morning and took Jeni and Sheila to stand trial before the elders. I thought that knowledge might make your mind rest easier. Devon has left a guard outside the room the entire time."
"I'm glad to hear that. I was afraid she would get away with what she had done." I gripe. "I fear she may yet if Devon fails to press charges."
"I don't think that is going to happen. Devon isn't going to let her get away with anything." She assures me. "He is devastated by her betrayal and about your rejection." I feel overly sensitive that Luna Wright would mention Jeni's betrayal before my rejection.
"Luna Wright, I'm not sure he has told you everything that has transpired between us, but I am justified in my rejection."
"I'm sure you are, dear. What with my husband's schemes and Jeni's plotting, you and Devon didn't stand a chance." She sighed wistfully. "I just hope you will allow me to spend time with my granddaughter." She looks at Devi who is playing contentedly across the room.
"I don't have a family, I was a foundling. I wouldn't keep her from good people who love her." I reassure her. "I am a little wary of Alpha Wright because of how he interfered with my mate bond with Devon." I admit.
"I can assure you that Alpha Wright regrets his interference with your mate bond. When Devon came home, his wolf would not have anything to do with Jeni after having met you." She comforted Amaris. "Oh, and I believe that Alpha Quinn wants to speak with you sometime today. He, Devon and Alpha Wright are in Devon's office right now."
"Well, no time like the present." I tap my thigh and stand from the couch. "There are a few things I would like to wrap up and then I plan on going home. I realize I have only been here just over a week, but this is a futile endeavor anyway."
