The clock read 10:35pm and the cool night breeze was gently blowing in through the open window rustling the curtains. June sat at her wooden desk in the corner of her room, pages of homework were strewn across the desk and the girl had her head laid on the wooden surface, blonde curls sprawled on the paper, her eyes were closed and she was fast asleep. Suddenly, she was jolted awake by the sound of the telephone ringing on the wall. She sat straight up in her chair, glanced at the clock on her bedside table and wiping the drool from her lips, she stood up and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" She asked, trying to hide the sleepiness in her voice.
"Hey Juju" Nancy's voice rang from the other end of the line.
"Oh hey Nance! what's up?"
"I was wondering if you knew what the homework was for our AP History class, I seemed to have forgotten what we were supposed to do?"
"Nancy, it's 10 at night and you're asking about homework??" June asked genuinely confused.
"Uh Yeah."
"Um okay... we have to write a 3 page essay on the American Revolution and its due tomorrow."
"Oh Dang, um okay thank you."
"Yeah no problem, was there anything else you needed?"
"Nope! I don't think so...oh! Are you coming to school tomorrow?
"Unfortunately, yes" June laughed "Why? Is there something going on?"
"Actually yeah!"
June heard the front door slam shut and her smile quickly faded, and she lowered the phone from her ear listening intently.
"June are you there?" Nancy asked from the other side of the line.
"Hey Nance, I'm gonna have to call you back."
"June! Hey! Is everything oka-"
She slammed the receiver back on the nightstand, and quietly opened her bedroom door and crept down the hall, on her way to see who had entered the Henderson residence at such a late hour. Just as she was about to round the corner to the living room, she collided into Dustin.
"AHHHGh!" They screamed in unison.
"You're not back yet?!" She whisper yelled
"Uhh, I'm back now!" He replied sarcastically.
"Woah, why are you so upset?"
"I owe Will my brand new X-Men comic!" Dustin pouted.
"Oh no, you lost a race again?" She asked, amused.
"You don't have to rub it in, Geeze!"
"Well you should get to bed before mom catches you and so you can get your rest and maybe, you wont lose another race?" She smiled lovingly at her brother.
"Yeah you're probably right." He said with a smile.
The two siblings shared a hug, and both headed to bed, hoping and praying that tomorrow would be a better day.
Little did they know, tomorrow would be the start of something that neither of them would see coming, let alone be able to stop it.
