Chapter 2: The Map Unfolds
The weathered scroll crackled in Wu Xie's hands, its surface marred by age and countless journeys. He spread it out on the dusty counter, the faded ink depicting a network of twisting tunnels that snaked beneath a mountain range. An ornately carved symbol, an eye fashioned from jade, marked a single point deep within the maze.
"The Jade Emperor's Tomb," Wu Xie murmured, tracing the symbol with his finger. A thrill of excitement coursed through him, tempered by the knowledge that tombs like this were rarely left undisturbed.
Yuchen, ever the voice of reason, leaned over his shoulder, his brow furrowed in concern. "Are you sure about this, Xie Xie? This could be very dangerous."
Wu Xie glanced at his friend, the excitement in his eyes unwavering. "Dangerous, maybe," he admitted. "But think about it, Yuchen. This could be a major historical find! The Jade Emperor's Tomb, untouched for centuries! And besides..." He hesitated, then met Yuchen's gaze with a determined glint. "We have to find out what happened to Grandpa. Maybe this scroll holds some clues."
Yuchen remained silent for a moment, his gaze locked on the cryptic map. He understood Wu Xie's desire for adventure, his curiosity about their family history. But a deep-seated protectiveness gnawed at him. He couldn't bear the thought of losing his best friend in some forgotten tomb.
"Alright," he finally sighed, resignation lacing his voice. "But we need to prepare properly. We can't just waltz into a tomb like tourists."
Relief washed over Wu Xie. "Exactly! We need supplies – food, water, torches, maybe some climbing gear..."
"And weapons," Yuchen interjected, his voice firm. "Tombs are often filled with traps and guardians. We need to be prepared for anything."
Wu Xie nodded in agreement. Although he had trained with his grandfather in martial arts, the thought of facing booby traps and ancient guardians sent a shiver down his spine.
They spent the next few days scouring the antique shop and Yuchen's family's hidden arsenal. They gathered sturdy backpacks, filled them with dried rations and water purification tablets. Yuchen retrieved a sturdy machete from a locked cabinet, its cold metal glinting in the dim light. Wu Xie, rummaging through his grandfather's belongings, stumbled upon a worn leather satchel. Inside, he found a collection of seemingly random items - lengths of sturdy rope, magnesium fire starters, and a strange compass etched with cryptic symbols.
As they assembled their gear, Xie Yuchen placed a hand on Wu Xie's shoulder. "Listen," he said, his voice serious. "This isn't a game, Xie Xie. Tombs are dangerous places. We need to stick together, watch each other's backs. If things get too hairy, we turn back. No heroics."
Wu Xie squeezed Yuchen's hand in return. "I know, Yuchen. Don't worry, I won't do anything reckless. Besides, with you by my side, what could go wrong?"
Yuchen offered a wry smile, though a flicker of worry remained in his eyes.
With their preparations complete, they turned their attention back to the weathered scroll. They spent hours poring over the map, deciphering cryptic symbols and faint markings. Based on their interpretation, the Jade Emperor's Tomb was located deep within a remote mountain range, days of travel from Hangzhou.
As dusk settled, casting long shadows across the shop, a knock echoed on the door. Wu Xie cautiously opened it to reveal a wizened old man with a long, braided beard. He wore a worn tunic and carried a weathered satchel slung across his shoulder.
"Are you Wu Xie?" the old man rasped, his voice raspy with age.
"Yes, that's me," Wu Xie replied, his curiosity piqued. "Who are you?"
The old man smiled, a hint of mischief twinkling in his eyes. "Someone who can help you on your journey. I believe you're searching for the Jade Emperor's Tomb, wouldn't you say?"
Wu Xie and Yuchen exchanged surprised glances. This unexpected visitor, with his cryptic words and knowing smile, felt like a piece of the puzzle falling into place.
