## Chapter 15: Human Hands
The aftermath of the cave-in cast a pall over the makeshift camp. The remaining members of Commander Li's team worked diligently to secure the area, their faces grim under the harsh glare of floodlights. The chilling knowledge of the collapsed entrance and the fate of Pan Ziwen hung heavy in the air.
Wu Xie huddled with Yuchen near a crackling fire, both lost in their own thoughts. The events in the chamber replayed in Wu Xie's mind – the blinding light, Pan Ziwen's screams, the gaping chasm swallowing him whole. A wave of grief washed over him, unexpected and raw. Though their alliance with the old man had been tenuous, his loss felt profound. He had been a repository of knowledge, a link to the past that had been severed so abruptly.
"We should have done something," Yuchen finally spoke, his voice heavy with regret.
Wu Xie shook his head. "There was nothing we could have done," he said, his voice hollow. "He was consumed by the power of that structure."
He looked up at the night sky, a tapestry of twinkling stars that seemed impossibly distant. "Do you think… do you think that's what happened to Grandpa?"
Yuchen placed a hand on his shoulder, a gesture of silent comfort. "We don't know," he admitted. "But maybe there's something else down there. Something that explains his disappearance."
A flicker of determination ignited within Wu Xie. Losing Pan Ziwen was a blow, but it wouldn't deter him. His grandfather's fate was still out there, somewhere within the labyrinth of tunnels that lay hidden beneath the mountain.
As dawn painted the eastern sky with streaks of pink and orange, Commander Li emerged from a tent, her face etched with a grim resolve. She approached Wu Xie and Yuchen, her eyes holding a mixture of sadness and determination.
"We've analyzed the data from the cave-in," she stated, her voice firm. "The energy signature has… intensified. We believe there might be another way into the lost city."
Wu Xie's brows furrowed. "Another way? But the entrance collapsed."
Commander Li gestured towards a holographic display projected from her wrist device. It depicted a detailed scan of the cave system, highlighting a previously overlooked section. "This," she explained, pointing to a faint tunnel branch, "seems like a secondary passage. It's heavily blocked, but with the right equipment…"
Hope, tempered with caution, flickered within Wu Xie. Another chance to reach the lost city, another chance to find answers. But the memory of the collapsing chamber, the terrifying power it unleashed, served as a stark reminder of the risks involved.
"We need to discuss the risks," Yuchen interjected, voicing the concerns swirling in Wu Xie's mind. "This mission... it's become even more dangerous."
Commander Li nodded in acknowledgement. "Indeed. However, the potential rewards are equally significant. Not just for uncovering the secrets of the lost city, but for understanding the power it wields. Power that, in the wrong hands, could be catastrophic."
A tense silence followed. Wu Xie exchanged a glance with Yuchen, the weight of the decision pressing down on them. They had come so far, lost a reluctant ally, and witnessed the destructive potential of the lost city. But the pull of the unknown, the pursuit of their goals, remained strong.
Finally, Wu Xie took a deep breath. "We'll do it," he declared, his voice resolute. "We'll help you find another way in. But this time, we need a different approach."
Commander Li's lips curved into a hint of a smile. "A different approach," she repeated. "Tell me, what do you have in mind?"
A spark of an idea flickered in Wu Xie's mind. They couldn't rely solely on brute force and technology. They needed to understand the lost city, not just breach its defenses. They needed…
"We need to consult the experts," Wu Xie said, a newfound determination burning in his eyes. "People who understand these ancient places, their languages, their rituals. Maybe then, we can enter the lost city not as trespassers, but as… guests."
The notion was audacious, perhaps foolhardy. But in the face of the unknown, it offered a glimmer of hope, a chance to unravel the secrets of the lost city not with brute force, but with knowledge and perhaps, a touch of respect for its slumbering power.
