Chapter 13: Echoes in Stone

The helicopter touched down on a makeshift landing pad nestled within a hidden valley. The air, crisp and clean, carried the scent of pine and damp earth. After days cooped up in the metal bird's cramped cabin, the feeling of solid ground beneath their feet was a welcome change.

Commander Li and her team, clad in their tactical gear, led the way. Wu Xie, Yuchen, and a visibly weakened Pan Ziwen followed close behind, their eyes scanning the unfamiliar terrain. The valley, shrouded in a veil of morning mist, seemed untouched by time. Lush vegetation carpeted the ground, and towering trees formed a dense canopy overhead.

"This is your staging area," Commander Li explained, gesturing towards a series of prefabricated tents that had been erected near the landing pad. "Here, you'll be briefed on your role and receive the necessary equipment."

Yuchen cast a wary glance at the heavily armed soldiers milling about the tents. "We appreciate the assistance," he said, his voice laced with a hint of suspicion, "but what about the details of this... deal?"

Commander Li stopped, turning to face them. "Patience, gentlemen," she said, her voice firm but not unkind. "There's time for negotiations once we understand the specific challenges we face."

She nodded towards a burly man with a shaved head and a no-nonsense demeanor. "Agent Chen will brief you and answer any immediate questions you have." With that, she turned and strode towards a separate tent, her presence commanding respect from her subordinates.

Agent Chen, a gruff but surprisingly patient individual, led them through a series of briefings. They learned about the organization they were now reluctantly aligned with – a private foundation dedicated to safeguarding historical artifacts and preventing their misuse. They were shown sophisticated equipment, ranging from advanced climbing gear to specialized scanners that could detect hidden passages and energy signatures.

Pan Ziwen, surprisingly, came alive during the equipment demonstrations. His eyes gleamed with a newfound spark as he examined the scanners, his weathered fingers tracing the intricate controls. Whether his enthusiasm stemmed from genuine interest or a hidden agenda remained to be seen.

As the day wore on, a sense of unease settled over Wu Xie. The briefings, while informative, painted a grim picture. The enemy, a shadowy organization with vast resources, was already on the move. Reaching the lost city first was no longer just a goal, but a desperate race against time.

Finally, as dusk painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, Commander Li emerged from her tent. She beckoned them to follow her into a secluded clearing, where a holographic display flickered to life, revealing a detailed map of the mountain range.

"Here's the plan," she began, her voice serious. "Our intel suggests the lost city is located within this network of caves," she pointed to a series of interconnected red lines on the map. "These scans," she continued, tapping another section of the display, "reveal an energy signature emanating from a specific location within the cave system. That's our target."

"And how do we get there?" Yuchen asked, his gaze fixed on the complex network of tunnels.

Commander Li gestured towards a group of her soldiers, all equipped with the latest spelunking gear. "You'll be accompanied by a team of our specialists. Their expertise in cave exploration is unmatched."

Wu Xie couldn't help but feel a pang of apprehension. Descending into an unknown cave system, teeming with hidden dangers, wasn't exactly his idea of a walk in the park. But the thought of his grandfather and the secrets buried within the lost city spurred him forward.

"What about Pan Ziwen?" he asked, glancing at the old man who stood by the edge of the clearing, a contemplative look etched on his face.

Commander Li's gaze followed his. "Pan Ziwen," she said, her voice laced with a hint of suspicion, "will be of... vital importance. His knowledge of ancient rituals may prove invaluable in navigating the city's defenses."

Pan Ziwen remained silent, his expression unreadable. Wu Xie couldn't shake the feeling that the old man was playing his own game, a game with rules they weren't yet privy to.

As the final rays of sunlight dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the clearing, a sense of foreboding descended upon them. The journey to the lost city was about to begin, and the path ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty.
