As the sky darkened, a chill settled in the air.
Anum got down the cab and a smile broke on her face as the farmhouse came into her view. She prayed all the way here. Fisting the sides of her black frock she ran towards the gate. She knocked on the door, and in no time, it swung open, revealing a Shehreyar with an impassive demeanor. Tears welled up in her eyes; it was the first time she had seen him since her walima.
"Sh-sherry."
But he wasn't surprised to see her; in fact, it seemed as though he had been expecting her.
"What are you doing here, Anum?" His asked her in a stern voice.
"I'm back Sherry, I came here for you. I have left Irtaza."
"And? What do you expect me to do about it?"
She blinked her eyes, confusion clouding her mind. Did he no longer want her?
"D-do you not love me anymore?"
"Love?" He scoffed at her.
"Listen, I liked you, okay? I really liked you a lot. But you're married now. And where were you when I kept begging you to believe me?"
"Sherry, what are you saying? Of course I believe you. I couldn't do anything because-
"Anum, you're missing the point. You're married now. Why should I be with a used woman when I can get a fresh cunt? Probably your good for nothing of a husband isn't satisfying you which is why you're coming back to me."
She didn't know how to react; it felt as if the earth had slipped from under her feet. Tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably, forming rivers of sorrow. She never expected that her Sherry would say such things to her someday. Was his love only for her body?
"Who's there Shehreyar?" Came a woman's voice from inside the house.
"No one, baby." He responded back.
"Look, my girlfriend is here with me. I don't want to cause any kind of scene, please leave."
Anum's breath hitched as her heart began to pound rapidly. Never once had she stopped thinking about him, and yet here he was, already moved on. Was her love that weak? Without considering her family, she had come to him, disregarding the potential consequences. She came to him only to discover he has already become someone else's. Her fragile heart denied to believe it.
"You're lying. You can never do something like that to me."
Suddenly, a young woman emerged from inside the house, her lips pressed into a thin line as she looked at Anum.
"Oh. It's you."
Anum frowned as she looked at her.
"Stop pestering my boyfriend; we're getting married soon. Moreover, he has chosen me over you. Tell her the truth, Shehreyar," said the woman.
"What truth, Shehreyar?" Anum asked with a trembling voice.
Shehreyar looked away from her.
"Fine. I'll tell her myself."
"You must be wondering why your groom wasn't in the wedding? Well, he was with me that's why."
Anum shook her head, "No! You're lying! Shehreyar tell me that she is lying, tell me SHEHREYAR!"
"Its the fucking truth!" He snapped at her.
Frustrated, he ran his hand through his hair. "Natasha is well settled. I need someone who is mature enough to handle responsibilities. Not a baby that I have to take care of for the rest of my life. Look, I'm sorry, but that's the truth."
"Then why did you come after the wedding? And the wounds? What about that? Somebody clearly hurt you," Anum asked him, tears streaming down her face.
"He came because he knew his whore of a girlfriend has married his fucking brother." Natasha replied in a bitchy tone.
"That asshole actually sent people to beat him up when he found out about us. And you, you did not want to lose any chance of marrying a rich man."
Anum shook her head vigorously.
"You don't even have a good background, Natasha's dad is a business, her mom is a businesswoman. What does your parents have? Nothing. What would I have obtained from the dowry? Nothing."
Her heart clenched painfully, hearing such harsh words from the person she loved.
"None of that mattered to you before, then why now?"
"Did you never love me?"
Shehreyar looked away.
"Enough! Get out!" Natasha screamed at her.
"I won't leave until I get all the answers."
With gritted teeth, Natasha pushed Anum roughly, but before she could hit the ground, someone gripped her waist, preventing her from falling. Anum slowly opened her eyes and found herself in the arms of her worst nightmare. Her body began to tremble uncontrollably, and she immediately cast her head down as Irtaza helped her stand properly.
"Didn't I fucking tell you both to stay away from my wife?"
"Sorry to disappoint you, but YOUR WIFE is at our house." Natasha retorted angrily.
A sinister smile crept onto his lips, accompanied by a glint of malevolence in his eyes.
In the next instant, Natasha collapsed, crying out loudly in pain as Irtaza shot her in the leg. Before Shehreyar could react, a sharp punch struck him in the face. "Bastard. How dare you mistreat my wife?"
Anum let herself slide to the ground, placing her head on her lap, sobbing uncontrollably. She never imagined that things would turn out like this. But she believed one thing; all the bad things were happening because of her, maybe she was the bad one.
"Your mother was a whore. Naturally, you've inherited her traits: greed, betrayal, lies, infidelity, and the list goes on."
"I will tolerate everything, but I won't tolerate anything about MY MOTHER!" His eyes were bloodshot.
Irtaza unleashed a series of back-to-back punches to his face, then began to kick him in the stomach as Shehreyar fell to the ground.
He moved towards Anum, who was crying hysterically. Without a word, he picked her up and began walking towards his car.
Anum didn't dare to look at him or even say a word as he placed her in the passenger seat and then went towards the driver's seat.
She could feel his anger radiating off of him. She placed her palm over her mouth to stifle any cries, not wanting to trigger him in any way. She had ruined everything. What would he do with her? What would he do to her family? She had betrayed him.
Her thoughts came to an end when the car stopped. She felt like her heart had stopped beating.
Getting out of the car, he slammed the door, causing her to jump in her seat. Seeing him moving towards the house, she contemplated whether to get out of here car or quietly follow him.
Choosing the former, she quickly ran for the main gate.
With a clenched jaw and flared nostrils, he moved towards Anum, who was trying hard to open the gate. He stopped his movements, keeping a little distance between them.
"Come here. Darwaza toh nahi khulega." (The gate will surely not open.)
She shook her head, sobbing uncontrollably.
"I won't do anything, just come here. But if I come there, then you'll surely see the worst side of me," he warned.
"Y-you'll hurt me. Like always. You'll hurt my family."
"I already told you, I won't do anything."
He extended his arms towards her, "Come here, baby."
Anum rushed to him and hugged him.
Her fingertips brushed against the strap of his holster, tracing its outline until she felt the shape of his gun nestled within.
Her hands, trembling badly, removed the metal from its holster and extracted the gun.
