Early the next morning, Koharu Hirose brought out her brand new bicycle to ride to school. She always loved riding bikes, feeling the wind in her face and admiring how each part of the bike worked together to move, but riding a new bike was always an extra-special occasion for her.
Koharu: Look how shiny the rims are, how smoothly the wheels roll! I can't believe I was given this new bike as a graduation gift to celebrate the start of high school! Riding a new bike always feels great! With a bike this amazing, I won't even have to take the school bus!
Koharu made a sharp right turn, but failed to notice an obstacle in the road until it was too late. She hit the object, crashing her bike and skidding across the road, covering herself in scrapes and bruises.
Koharu: That hurts! What happened?
Looking down at the road, Koharu spotted a burlap sack that was caved in at the middle, the skid marks leading up to it confirming that it was the obstacle she had tripped on.
Koharu: What's that sack doing there?
Just as she had asked the question, the bag began to rustle as a faint mewling was heard coming from it. There seemed to be something alive in the sack.
Koharu: N-no way... Th-that bag had a-
The sack stopped moving as its dirty white fabric began to stain red, confirming Koharu's worst fears and causing her to spiral into a panic.
Koharu: What have I done?! I ran over a cat! But I couldn't avoid it! Someone must have left it there. What should I do?
???: You're right.
Koharu looked behind her to see a man of short stature with a flat top haircut sitting on a bench. He seemed to have a scar in the shape of a cross on his left cheek.
???: That was just an accident waiting to happen. It's not like you meant to run into it. In my opinion, the person to blame is the bastard that left that poor kitten there in the first place. Pretty rotten if you ask me.
Koharu: We've got to do something! I have to take it to a vet!
???: There's no need. It's not moving or making any noise. Sorry to say, but it's dead for sure. Say, what's your name, kid? I'm Tamami Kobayashi. I graduated high school two years ago.
Tamami looked down as Koharu's bike, still lying on the ground after the crash. Koharu wasn't moving, she was just staring at the bleeding bag with shock and sadness.
Tamami: Hey, nice bike! So, you a freshman?
Koharu snapped out of her trance and turned to address the man.
Koharu: Y-yes, I am. I'm Koharu Hirose.
Tamami: Boy, do I miss high school. I was free and unrestrained. Come have a seat over here.
Koharu: B-but...
Koharu hesitated, pointing at the bag, so Tamami walked over and placed a "comforting" hand on her shoulder.
Tamami: Leave it. Just sit down first.
Essentially dragging her over to the bench, Tamami sat Koharu down while taking a seat next to her. Koharu was still sweating from the uncomfortable situation, not to mention this creepy guy that still had his hand on her shoulder.
Tamami: Now that we're all nice and comfy, I have a proposal for you, Koharu-chan. I'll take care of burying the cat, but I won't do it for free. What do you say to contributing to the burial costs, hm? Sound fair?
Koharu barely had time to think about Tamami's offer before he slammed his foot down, narrowly missing hers.
Tamami: HEY, IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR EARS?!
