The first two weeks of Xiphoid Camp's winter session had drawn to a close, which only meant one thing: the final due date for late homework had arrived.
"Where's your homework?" Arin asked as Avior slid into the seat next to them.
"Haven't done any of it," Avior said casually. "Watch this,"
He had been up until the sun crept over the horizon fabricating this exquisite lie.
"As you know," Rosemarie said, "Today is the final deadline for those of you to turn in homework you, ahem, forgot to complete over the holidays,"
Avior immediately shot his hand into the air.
Rosemarie sighed. "What is it, Mr. Viator?"
"I'm terribly sorry," Avior said just as he'd rehearsed, "but I'm afraid that I haven't a single page of homework to turn in. Unfortunately, it does not exist anymore."
Rosemarie heaved another great sigh and pinched the bridge of her nose. "And what, pray tell, happened to it?"
"Marcus ate it," Avior said plainly. Arin slid down in their chair until you could only see the top of their head.
"Mr. Gill ate your homework,"
"Yes. All of us, James, Bradley, Todd, Nicky, me—we were all begging him not to, but he was deaf to our cries, and my months of hard work disappeared deep into his gaping maw!"
Rosemarie folded her arms and arched an eyebrow. "I only assigned three pages," she said. "It took you months to complete three pages?"
Avior nodded. "My methods of work are beyond your comprehension," he said.
Arin was completely under the desk now.
"Do you want me to give you detention?"
"No, thanks. I'm quite content to go detention-free this week,"
Destiny giggled.
"Please speak with me after class, Mr. Viator,"
Arin crawled off the floor and got back in their chair as Rosemarie moved on to algebra or something.
Destiny twisted around in her seat. "That was really funny," she said. "I wish you'd be nicer to her, but I think you're really brave to mess with a teacher like that. I could never!"
"You should try it," Avior said, "It's devilishly fun!"
Arin went very pale. They shook their head frantically.
Destiny giggled. "Maybe I will!" she said, turning back around to face Rosemarie.
Arin had that strange look on their face again. "Don't you DARE corrupt her!" they hissed.
Avior rolled his eyes. "You're just jealous because she only talks to me and not you," he said.
"I couldn't care less about girls!" Arin burst out defensively.
"Me neither!" Avior exclaimed. "So what's the problem, then?"
"We can talk more about this later," Arin said, turning their attention to Rosemarie.
Destiny walked into class the next day smiling widely and giggling to herself.
"I'm going to try messing with Miss Buckley today," she said confidentially. Arin put their fingers in their ears, declaring that they wanted 'no part in this'.
