High Hopes

The Cater with Ophelia told her everything that had happened. Though she hadn't formally met Riddle, she was more uncertain on whether she should stay for the party. She didn't want to get screamed at and she certainly didn't want more collared students to end up in Ramshackle. Ace's transfer had been a joke, but it was starting to look serious.

"Trey, I've found someone to help you!" Cater announced.

Trey's head snapped as he looked at Ophelia, "You'd be perfect for this job."

She walked to him, looking at the layout of the pastries. "What's wrong?"

"Everyone wants to use magic, but this needs a bit more of a delicate touch," Trey said and directed her on how to layout the pastries. She didn't ask Trey why he couldn't do it himself. The unfocused, sleep deprived look on his face told her everything.

"Did you stay up all night with preparations?" She asked.

"No, I stayed up all night helping students cope with losing their magic."

She frowned a bit, "Cater was talking about that. Is it really that bad?"

"There are 810 rules the Queen of Hearts enforced. I've memorized a good bit of them, but Riddle's memorized them all. The slightest infraction can mean off with your head."

She hesitated, "Am I allowed to be here?"

He smiled at her, "Of course. However, you should be properly dressed for an unbirthday party."

He pointed his pen at her, and her outfit changed. It changed more than she would have liked. Her uniform became one piece, turning into a white dress with sweetheart neckline. The bodice was red on the right side and black on the left. Gold hearts were embroidered on the bottom of the white skirt. Around her neck was a black and white patterned choker. On her feet were red flats, quite possibly the most normal thing she was wearing at the moment.

Trey smiled, though there was a slight blush on his cheeks, "It's a good look for you."

"Well, it's not bad," she admitted then went back to organizing pastries.

He picked up the plate and passed it to a student then placed another in front of her, "So, why didn't you want to paint the roses?"

"I got knocked off the ladder yesterday. I was covered in paint." She stopped moving when she saw the tremble in her hands. "Sorry, I don't know if I can help now."

"Must have been embarrassing," Trey said gently.

"Well, it probably was if I hadn't already been color coated by spells missing the roses. Ace, Deuce, and Grim just had to pick a fight with Cater. One of Cater's spells hit the ladder, and down I went. I'm...actually terrified to be on a ladder. I've been here for three days and already fallen off two ladders. At least someone caught me the first time."

"Oh? Who caught you?"

"His name is Floyd, and that's really all I know about him."

"Floyd?! Tall, blue hair, weird eyes, sharp teeth?"

"Yeah, that's him. I met him in the Hall of Mirrors after the paint covered me and he magicked the paint and color spells off me."

"Ophelia, you need to be careful with him. Floyd's...well...he's not stable. Just because he's being nice now, doesn't mean that will continue. You can't trust him. And don't bother getting to know Jade. He's worse than Floyd. I can promise he will force you to do something since he's helped you." He sighed as he picked up the plate of pastries, "Cmon. Let's forget about Floyd and have a good unbirthday."

Ophelia followed Trey out of the kitchen to the Tea Garden. Her jaw dropped at the chaos around the area. Circular tables with white table clothes were everywhere, but what was odd were the chairs. No two chairs were the same. She even saw a tiny stool on a stack of books. Each table had a teapot of some sort and a well done stack of teacups with some sort of flowers in the top cup. There was one table that was long and rectangular, a wonky four tiered cake with a top hat place dangerously close to the edge.
