Chapter 1
Jisung was shaking in his room. He hadn't moved from there but he was freaking out. What if the murderer saw him? What if he was the next target? He only ever made a noise when he heard the sirens, a relieved sigh leaving his lips. He hadn't moved till he heard the bell ring and he rushed outside his room just in time to see his mom open the door, looking confused to see the officers there.
Officer 1: Jisung Park is here?
Mrs. Park: Why...?
Officer 1: He had called the ambulance for the murder that took place across your house.
His mom finally turned around and made eye contact with him. Jisung just gulped uncomfortably as his mom's eyes widened probably digesting whatever was happening. Jisung looked over at the officer who stood up straighter.
Officer 1: Park Jisung?
He nodded and the officer nodded grimly as well.
Officer 1: Detective Seo would like to see you. And you will need to come to the station to give a statement as well.
Mrs. Park: Can... Can I come as well?
Jisung: Mom, i don't think-
Officer 1: Its gruesome ma'am. And people that are not involved with the incident are not allowed there. You can come to the station. We will need your statement even if you didn't hear or see anything.
Jisung looked at his mom who nodded, a worried look enveloping her face. She grabbed onto Jisung's arm giving it a squeeze. He couldn't tell if it was one out of comfort because he was sure that like him, she was just as nervous.
But he managed to briefly hug her before following the officers out. Jisung's heart raced, wondering if the killer was around to see him. To watch him. To plan on how to kill him too.
Jisung felt a shiver run down his body as they stepped out of the elevator and took the short walk to the next building. His eyes were on his feet, letting the Officer guide him to wherever. The entire thing was a haze until his feet came to a stop before a police tape. Jisung finally looked up and flinched when he saw the even more gruesome sight up close this time.
Blood was everywhere. The walls, the floor, the ceiling, the furniture... it was everywhere. He wondered if there was any blood left in the body of the victim.
He could only see the legs of the dead body and he didn't bother trying to lean in to see more. He was sure he was going to vomit at the sight. He couldn't handle it. His hands were shaking and he felt himself stiffen.
???: Park Jisung?
Jisung flinched out of his thoughts and glanced at the male who walked out of the house and from below the tape, standing next to him with a blank expression.
???: You were the one who called first?
He nodded.
First? Was there another?
As if one cue another girl came to stand next to Jisung. He looked down at her as she peeked in and, similarly to him, flinched.
He recognized her. She was the same awkwardly silent girl who went to college with him who also happened to be his upstairs neighbour. She was shaking next to him and looked like she was on the verge of tears.
She looked up and her eyes widened on recognizing him.
???: And you are Bae Yeorin?
She nodded hesitantly, finally tearing her eyes away from Jisung.
???: Alright kids, I'm detective Seo, you can call me the same. You both had called the ambulance quite literally two minutes apart. Can you tell me how you got to see what you saw?
He looked at Jisung first who nervously fiddled with his fingers.
Jisung: I... I um was watching the stars through my window... using my telescope. And... this window was open and... I just... I just saw it...
The detective nodded before looking down at the girl next to Jisung.
Yeorin: I-I... heard voices from below... which-um which I'm guessing was his house...
She looked at Jisung and he remembered shouting to his mother when his telescope almost fell.
Yeorin: Then I just happened to glance in here and... and... saw...
Her lips quivered as Jisung closed his eyes.
Yeorin: I think... I think the killer saw me... I... When t-they were- um going to run away... I think we made eye contact.
Detective Seo: And they didn't attack?
Yeorin: I quickly shut the window and hid myself in the closet.
The detective looked at the officer who nodded.
Officer 2: She wouldn't open the door when we knocked. We had to barge in and we found her in the closet with a baseball bat.
Detective Seo: Alright... then I'm guessing the sound that you heard from Jisung's place could have brought the killer's attention to him too?
Jisung: I... I don't know... I only saw the killer turn to me when I gasped... which was after I saw what I saw...
He mumbled most of it, unable to think straight. Did the killer have a good look of me then?
He felt his stomach churn with nervousness as he glanced down at Yeorin who looked back up at him while she picked on her hoodie sleeves, her eyes shaking with terror.
He gulped too, definitely terrified now. As if his fate was sealed. As if for sure, he was going to die by the hands of this killer.
Jisung let out a shaky breath and leaned back onto the wall, closing his eyes in fear. But whenever he did, all he saw was the killer dropping the lifeless body of the man who used to live in this house.
He felt Yeorin stand next to him too as the detective and officers whispered a bit away from them. Yeorin was silent but he could tell that they were standing in the same boat.
Detective Seo: Okay, Jisung and Yeorin. We're going to take you to the police station to get your statements. Jisung you can see your mother there, Yeorin, do you have someone we can call?
The girl simply shook her head in response and Jisung pondered for a while, only now realising that he has actually never seen the girl's family.
Detective Seo: Alright then. This officer will lead you out. Don't worry, you both are safe.
Strangely, despite being surrounded by armed law enforcement, Jisung didn't feel safe.
