Nehlani eyes burned with tears as she drove home. How dare they accuse of neglecting her students? She taught special ed for fuck's sake! One turn away and there would be something wrong.
She sighed, as the tears fell and she looked at the clock; 6:57 pm. She was still in traffic and she desperately wanted to get home and soak her body, maybe have a good cry.
"C'mon. Change, you stupid light." She muttered, honking her horn, as if this would magically change the red stoplight to green. After another gruelling 10 seconds, it finally changed.
Her thoughts ran back on today.
"Ms. Kingston?" Mr. Lewis, the principal of McCarthy's School for The Challenged knocked and she looked up at him, her Oakwood eyes assessing him.
His jacket sat unflattering on his shoulders, falling short just above his belt and she took the safety scissors from Jacob; a non-verbal autistic 4 year old.
She cooed a few soft words at him and he smiled, nodding.
"Can I speak to you in my office?" He shifted from leg to leg, sweat beading at his hairline and she gestured to the kids.
"Will Amy watch them for this talk?" She folded her arms after perching her leopard print glasses in her Raven hair that was tied in a professional bun.
"Uh...yes. I suppose I can get her to do that for a bit." He nervously wiped at the sweat and she watched his body language; twitchy and on edge. He was about to deliver bad news or tell her something that was about to upset her.
Being married to a soldier; a Captain at that had her more vigilant of her surroundings and other things more than she was before. He also showed her how to control her emotions and body language, to never give how she was feeling away.
He could still read her like a book, no matter how hard she tried to hide how she was feeling.
"Amy!" His voice boomed down the hall and Avery, being mute jumped and Nehlani gave her a reassuring smile, helping her break apart her London bridge and she giggled, all forgetting about the voice that made her uncomfortable.
Footsteps skittered up and a brunette popped in her head, all smiles and Nehlani rolled her eyes. She walked away from them, standing to the door and flicked the lights twice, signaling for all eyes to be on her.
"Kids, I'm going to the office for a bit. Please do the activities that I left and be nice to Ms. Amy." She signed as she spoke and she watched as their faces turned sour at the mention of her.
Not a fan favorite amongst them. Nehlani took note.
"Let's go." She gave the children one more reassuring smile and left the room, Mr. Lewis hot on her tail.
"I'm the principal, you can't just snap your fingers or say something and I have to do it." He spluttered, as he tried to keep up with her purposeful strides to his office.
"Then run this shit like you mean it, Adam." She opened the door. "After you." She cocked an eyebrow and he sighed, brushing past her. She sat in the chair in front of him and fixed her skirt, as the door behind her opened.
Rose water and cheap strawberry scented perfume.
Eden Goldbloom.
The pain in Nehlani's ass. She sat across from Nehlani and she scoffed. Not a hair out of place and her makeup impeccable. She did know that this was a school and not a fucking brothel right?
