ashes - by me :))

the chalk cliffs stretch along the coast
a division of land and sea.
the darkened, grey sky is deceitful,
for no storm is coming.
it is calm here.
perhaps it is also in mourning.

the froth of a new wave drowns my ankles
and washes away the silky sand beneath my feet.
my eyes remain fixated on the horizon
as i wonder if the sounds of the sea
finally put you at peace.

no depth of water, like the sea that spans before me
could keep us apart
if there was, in any way,
a chance of being back with you.

would the sounds of the ocean
and the cries of the seagulls
and the sounds of splashing
and the sounds of pebbles and sand
finally put you at peace?

i wonder if those memories were made for something
other than my despair
and if they brought you any comfort
whilst you were slipping away.

i am so
so
so
so
sorry
that i did not get to say goodbye.

and now it is all i can do to hope
that you are
finally at peace.
