There’s a new card game at the Turtle Game Store called Duel Monsters, and it’s super popular in America, but it does have a small following in Japan as well. Duel Monster cards are different from regular playing cards, for they have pictures on them, and there are thousands of different Monster and Spell cards. Anzu liked the pictures on the cards, but said that some of them were gross.
"So how do you play with these cards?" asked Katsuya. "Is it like gambling?"
"It's a trading card game, Katsuya," I said. "You trade your cards with other people. The game is played with two people, where the players try to cause their opponent to lose all of their Life Points. The game is set up so that both players are wizards, for they use their cards to cast spells and summon monsters to battle with their opponent’s monsters. The Monster Cards have different Attack and Defense Points. When one of the players’ Life Points reaches zero, then that player loses the game.”
“And yes, there are strong and weak cards!” said Sugoroku.
“But there are so many cards!” said Katsuya. “It’s impossible to collect all of them!”
“I’ve heard of this one guy who sold his house to buy a card!” I said.
“And this old man has one amazing card!” said Sugoroku.
“You got that right!” I said.
“Can you show us?” asked Katsuya.
Sugoroku thought for a moment, then decided to show us his ultra-rare card. He then found his card, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and showed it to us. The makers of Duel Monsters had stopped making the card because it was so strong. Katsuya knew that it was worth a lot of money, and he wanted to play Duel Monsters at school. He then bought some packs of cards, and looked at them.
Then the door to the store opened, and a guy carrying a briefcase came in. His name was Seto Kaiba, and he was really good at Duel Monsters. He then saw me. “So this is your family’s game store Yugi?” he asked.
I looked over at him. “Oh, hey Seto,” I said.
“Hello,” said Seto. He then saw the Duel Monster cards we have. “I see that you play Duel Monsters.”
“You play it too, Seto?!” asked Katsuya. “That's just perfect! We’re going to be playing it at school tomorrow! You can join our group if you want.”
“You want me to join your group?” asked Seto. “Give me a break, you guys! You really think you’re in my league? Let me see your cards.” He then looked at Katsuya’s cards, and said that they were useless as he tossed them back to Katsuya. “I’m good enough to compete in the national tournament! There’s no way you can win against my deck. It’d be completely pointless to play against you. Once you have collected 10,000 cards, then you can Duel me.”
“Don’t worry Katsuya,” I said. “I’ll play with you!”
Katsuya knew that he would be able to beat Seto in a fight, if he had the chance to fight Seto.
Seto then walked up to the counter, and asked if there were any cards that he could buy. Then he saw the Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, and asked Sugoroku just how he got the card. He really wanted the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, so he slammed his briefcase onto the counter, and opened it. “Mr. Mutou! If you give me that Blue-Eyes White Dragon, then I’ll give you all of these cards!!” he said.
