Chapter 24

General Rehearsal

Amor's POV

Unwanted and disappointed at the time itself, it made me let her go as we separated at the parking lot. It created an undesirable distance between our bodies.

In a short time, I have sown seeds of love, seeds that I didn't know I possessed inside me until I met her. Until that red thread merged our fate. I can't imagine a day when she would not be by my side. Her absence all these days away from me was torturous. Not just sexually, no, I need to be on good terms with her always so I can work or simply live like a human.

As soon as the lift stops and the distance becomes unbearable, she removes her fingers from mine and follows Fiona to the changing room. She left me there in the midst of vast loneliness and longing.

Daniella came and dragged me out of my momentary pain with her cruelty.

"She isn't going to guillotine but to change," I stare at her angrily for her rude comment, but of course Dani is Dani and she doesn't give a fly to my glare. Why would she? She doesn't know what love is.

The whole rehearsal time is like being transferred into a hive where bees run-fly from one spot to the other, collecting there fixings here, as they all know that I, aka the queen bee (laughing at my nickname right now), want everything to be perfect.

The event that is planned for 25 December, meaning two days from today, will be held on the roof of the building. I don't want to rent an enormous hotel because there always seems to be something missing or lost in transition, and the result would not be what I had envisioned from the start.

"Attention! It's time for the general rehearsal, please take your place as the defile starts." Dani’s voice reverberated inside the hive and whoever was running from one side to the other was suddenly gone. I took my rightful place at the front of the runway, which this year is designed to represent a piece of the universe, much like the atmosphere around it that resembles the Milky Way - with a 3D effect - but as soon as the models come, the whole spotlight is on them.

Then came Maribel, wearing the red cocktail dress.

How is that possible? That dress isn't meant for her. What is going on here?

I stood up from my chair, a mixture of worries written on my face, as Dani came over to my right.

"What's wrong, Agustin?"

"What is Maribel doing in the red dress?!" I almost shouted at her, looking completely clueless.

"What would I know, huh? You make those dresses, not me. Don't shout at me ever again, capisce!" She pushed my shoulder away and went to the other side, clearly peeved with me.

Maribel was literally shining on the runway. The dress fit her perfectly, which was surprising because the dress was made for girls who are not as thin as her. She must have gained weight somehow. Looking into her smiling eyes, I spotted the man standing behind her. Robert was not far away from me, gazing at my sister with longing eyes. His demeanor had changed, now resembling that of a happy man. Maribel walked away and the other girls appeared with dresses designed by the crew. I was waiting for her to appear again. As soon as I noticed her tendrils brushing her face at the beginning of the runway, my heartbeat quickened in a way that was unusual—different from the usual race, but tinged with anguish.

The light fell on her, and the white dress made her look like an angel. Finally, I could see what my hands had detected earlier today inside the car. She had lost weight. Not just a normal amount, but drastically. Her cheekbones were more pronounced, her hip bones too, not to mention her ribs which could be counted by the naked eye. Even Maribel, who had suffered from an eating disorder for years, had never looked so skinny.

In the middle of the runway, she stopped, and with her, my heart stopped when I saw her falling to the ground.
