Chapter One – Movie Night

Emily watched the droplets of rain as they snaked and trickled down the passenger-side window of Alex's car. She gazed out into the darkness, wearily mesmerised by the black sheen and the distorted reflections from the wet tarmac, as he turned off the road and drove slowly into the car park. She glanced up at the illuminated movie posters lining the front wall of the cinema, which seemed to glow like welcoming beacons in the darkness, before they were suddenly out of sight again, obscured by a slowly passing car.

The sounds of tyres swishing through the puddles and the brief noise of a car engine roused Emily from her daze. She sighed and looked around as Alex reversed the car into an available spot on the far side of the car park. Without a word, the couple hurried through the wind and the rain, over the dark, wet tarmac and into the brightly lit lobby of the cinema. They stood for a moment, just inside the doorway, as they composed themselves. Slightly dazed by the sounds and the brightness, Emily gazed around, observing people wandering about the lobby, heading in different directions, queuing for the box office, congregating around the snack section, and waiting to pass the barriers which led through to the screens.

"Ok Emily," came his voice, focusing her mind back to the moment at hand. "You know the drill. I'll get the tickets, and you get the snacks and things."

"Okay, gotcha," replied Emily, glancing back over towards the groups of people which were gathered around the pick and mix and popcorn.

Without hesitation, she headed for the sweets. After a few indecisive moments, a stroke of inspiration and a few minutes of queuing, Emily was waiting for Alex, over by the barriers to the screens.

"Ready?" he asked her, striding over and handing the tickets to the young usher guarding the rope barrier.

"Of course," she replied, as the teenage cinema employee stamped the tickets and handed them back to Alex.

"Yeah?" he said, slipping the ticket stubs into his pocket. "Alright, but be a good girl and go and do a wee before we head inside, won't you."

Emily flushed bright red. She looked up at the young usher, who awkwardly glanced away as if to stifle a laugh. Emily glared back at Alex, wide eyed and with an expression that masked and subdued her true annoyance at him. "Yes, thank you for reminding me," she said sarcastically through a jutted jaw, before turning to the usher and rolling her eyes.

"Good girl," Alex said, nonchalantly, seemingly oblivious, or at least, uncaring towards his girlfriends embarrassment.

Emily shook her head and shoved the drinks and popcorn into Alex's hands, before hurrying up the small set of steps and down the wide corridor towards the toilets. Alex followed closely behind, inspecting Emily's choice of refreshments.

"Sweet popcorn, salted popcorn, two sprites, and what's this? Oh of course, overpriced pick and mix," he said to himself, as he peered into the paper bag, stuffed with assorted sweets. "Hurry up, Emily," he called, as she turned the corner and headed towards the ladies'. "The trailers will be over in a minute and the film will be starting...soon...and...," he called out, trailing off as she ignored him and stepped out of sight. He looked about, cleared his throat and took a sip through the straw of one of the large drinks.

Flustered, and feeling a little embarrassed, Emily hurried across the ladies' room and straight into a cubical. She huffed as she locked the door, before turning around, looking down at the toilet, and promptly flushing it.

Ugh, some people are so inconsiderate! she thought, as she reached under her skirt and slid down her pull-up. "Shit! Oh that's right," she whispered to herself, suddenly remembering that she wasn't wearing knickers.
