Chapter Fifteen – A Welcome Rest
A vague sense of arrival stirred Emily from her sleep—a dawning feeling that the car she was travelling in was no longer cruising at high speed, but now moving at a slow crawl. She yawned and stretched are arms downwards towards her knees as she tried to wake up.
"We're still not home?" she asked, sleepily rubbing her eyes.
"Not quite," said Alex softly.
"What time is it?" she asked, with another small yawn.
"Late enough that we need to stop," he replied.
Emily glanced at him briefly, her expression puzzled, then turned to look out of the window. It was still dark outside, but she knew she had been asleep for more than just a few minutes.
"Where are we? Not another carpark?" she asked, noticing a row of parked trucks come into view as Alex followed the curving road past a petrol station and into a wide, open expanse of tarmac. "Wait, we're at a service station?" she asked, as a large building on the other side of the carpark came into view.
"We're at Cambridge services," he said calmly.
"What? Why? I thought we were going home!" she replied, becoming agitated and shifting about in her car seat.
"There's one..." he muttered, ignoring Emily's words as he spotted a free parking space just outside the building ahead.
"Hey! What's going on? Why aren't we going home?!" she whined, her voice rising with insistence.
"Emily, please!" he snapped, frowning briefly. "Look, we're just going on a little trip," he said as he began reversing into the free space.
"A trip to where? To Cambridge? Where are we going?"
"If I were taking you to Cambridge, why would we be stopping at the Cambridge service station?" he replied in a weary tone. "Look, it's a surprise. But I'll give you one clue—it's not Cambridge."
"Well, how long is the trip? Are we going abroad?"
"Long enough, and no," he said, checking that his wallet was in his coat pocket.
"Long enough? What about work and stuff?"
"Work can wait," he replied calmly as he opened the car door and stepped out. "Be a good girl and stay put," he added, turning back to face her. "I'm just going to get our room key from the check-in desk. They're expecting us."
"What? We're staying at a hotel?" she asked as he slammed the driver's door shut with a thud. "Hey?!" she called as the central locking clicked and car's interior lights went out. "Hey!!"
She watched as he walked away and entered the building through a pair of glass double doors that led into a well-lit lobby. Above the doors, a large neon sign read "Travel Inn."
"Great, so I'm just supposed to sit here in the dark and wait, am I?" she grumbled, watching Alex through the doors as he silently conversed with a woman behind the front desk. She sighed, resigning herself to wait patiently for his return.
Something doesn't feel right she thought, as she wriggled under the tight straps of the car seat, trying to make herself more comfortable. A quiet, muffled crinkling emanated from her crotch as she gently moved her knees together and apart again, the bulk of her nappy and the frame of the car seat keeping them separated.
I don't remember my nappy being this thick, she thought, looking down to her crotch. Oh god, is it? Oh no...I think it's swollen. It must have happened while I was asleep! She reached between her legs and lightly pressed her fingers against the thin, pink fabric of her onesie.
