— ♛ —Due to Viserys insisting that they leave in the morning, Valarr did not get to see the dragons of Driftmark. However, it was not long before he was given the chance.
By the turn of the first moon of the year, the Velaryon fleet had amassed in Blackwater Bay. Valarr had seen sail from the garden walkway above the training yard. Ships docking in the bay were nothing new, but a whole fleet was something else entirely. The only thing more impressive was the formation of dragons that led them. From far away, one would think they were gulls, though by the time they reached the edge of the Kingswood, the terrifying shape of Vhagar was unmistakable. Terrifying indeed.
Vhagar was proud of his namesake.
The wedding of Princess Rhaenyra and Ser Laenor Velaryon caused a massive uproar for those within the Red Keep. Servants raced, tasked with finalizing the preparations for tomorrow night's royal feast, and that was only the beginning. Viserys declared there was to be seven days of tourney before the ceremony was to take place. This excited Valarr, mainly because he would be forcing Ser Gideon to enter the melee and perhaps the joust. He was told to be on his best behaviour by both Viserys and Ser Gideon, but that would do nothing to stop him. There were still many things he could do under those orders.
Take, for example, what he was doing now outside the back entrance to the kitchens. If anyone were to ask, he was doing nothing — absolutely nothing, besides keeping watch. It was Aegon, now inside the kitchens, who was executing their agreed-upon plan.
Valarr would deny to anyone that it was his idea to raid the kitchens for sweets; after all, Aegon was already on his way to do that when he found him. However, he did stop his younger cousin from entering through the front doors where everyone would see him. Arrax was quick to point out that they were stealing — a crime, but since Valarr was not planning to eat the sweets, it was not his crime. Really, the only reason he came along was so that he may give whatever Aegon escaped with to Helaena, who had not left her chambers this morning.
By that logic, raiding the kitchens was a good thing.
He did not have to guess why Helaena had not been seen. Tessarion was to blame, as she usually was. The Flame most commonly spoke in prophecies and, on occasion, songs. Since discovering Tessarion was the only Flame Helaena could hear, Valarr had tried his best to keep close to her. Whatever prophecy the goddess had imparted to her this morning must have been incredibly distressing, or he would not be inclined to have Aegon steal on her behalf.
Helaena was barely five years of age. A child of five could not make sense of hearing voices, let alone prophecies. This is how Valarr learned how different their connections to the Flames were. While he grew up listening to fourteen gods, who were present one way or another, always talking, Helaena heard only a single confounding voice that she could not differ from her own thoughts. He knew what it was like. The Flames could be relentless and intrusive, demanding attention at the drop of a hat.
