The sun was slowly fading, casting a twilight veil across the land. As darkness descended, I gazed ahead, transfixed and unable to look away.
Suddenly, something emerged from the earth, startling me. It was none other than the esteemed Queen, a recipient of accolades. I never imagined I would behold her countenance once more. Adorned in resplendent gold, she exuded an aura of fury, evident in her blazing, golden eyes. A white serpent was coiled around her neck, leaving me breathless. "You also find yourself in this inferno, Your Highness?" I inquired. Her eyes flickered from white to gold as she retorted, "No, fool. I am here as your nightmare."
I recoiled in horror as I witnessed her raise a talon, its tip stained with blood, poised to strike towards my neck. In a frenzied frenzy, I realized the pace of my heart quickening as she tore into my throat, unleashing a primal scream.
Alas, my reflexes were not swift enough, for her jaws were already clamping down on my neck, drawing blood. Simultaneously, the white serpent extended its ivory head, fixating its lethal gaze upon me. In a swift motion, it lunged towards her jaws, snapping open to ensnare me, coiling around my muzzle and stifling my agonized cries. The inevitable dance of predator and prey commenced, tearing me asunder.
"You shall perish twice over, and many times more, for the atrocities you have wrought upon the kingdom!" Queen Awardwinner snarled before departing, leaving my throat to bleed profusely. Her serpentine companion, however, retained its grip around my muzzle, rendering me incapable of any sound beyond silent sobs. In the wake of her departure, the Queen of the NightWings unfurled her magnificent wings, shaking off the blood from her muzzle and talons in a crimson cascade.
"You deceived me, Y/n, and it was solely your hand that orchestrated this betrayal, defiling me with my very own mate!" Her tail quivered as if poised to turn and viciously tear my heart asunder. Alas, this was but a dream, a ghastly nightmare, rendering her unable to exact physical retribution upon me.
I weakly clawed at the snake, which took the cue and departed, leaving my jaws throbbing. As I gingerly touched my aching mandibles and swallowed hard, I spoke slowly, "I... I am deeply remorseful, Your Highness... I did not..." I shook my head. "I deserve every penalty you have for me, but I am already dead, Your Highness. You cannot kill me again."
The queen, her award-winning grace undiminished, turned her gaze towards me, her golden orbs now fully ablaze in their customary emerald hue. "Oh, but I can," she declared.
She then sighed, the flames in her eyes extinguishing as she cast her gaze towards the ground. Her jeweled rings drooped as she examined her claws. "But what am I if not a killer myself? You were right, Your Highness, when you warned me about Apex, and I foolishly chose not to listen to you," she lamented, running her long claws across her forehead. "Yet, it pains me deeply that my only confidante in this cursed kingdom could betray me and be unfaithful with my own mate."
"I am sorry," I whispered faintly, my voice hoarse.
Queen Awardwinner simply smiled softly, turning to face me once more as her serpent elegantly coiled around her chest. "It's okay, Y/n. You have your own kingdom now; live it with grace and lead with wisdom," she uttered before the dream faded away.
