"Are you and Brite in love?" Karine asks me.
"No," I snap, "And remember, I told you to be absolutely quiet."
"I am being quiet," Karine says.
"No, you're not," I laugh, "You haven't stopped talking since we left camp."
"Yes I have!" my twelve year old friend protests.
"Well yeah..." I say, "For about three and half seconds!"
"That's not true!" Karine says, "Look, I didn't you follow all the way here to fight about whatever we're actually fighting about."
"You sure didn't," I agree, "You followed me here to help me bring home supper. But looks like we're going to have to sleep on empty stomachs tonight because you won't shut up."
"I will shut up!" Karine says, "Well, eventually, at any rate. I just want to figure out this whole you and Brite thing. You came back from where ever you went off to a few hours ago. And you were holding hands! Then I saw him hug you while you were supposed to-"
"Okay, I get it," I grumble, "You're convinced we're in love. Well, guess what? We're not."
Karine looks disappointed for a minute. The good news is that she's quiet. I sigh and bend over next to the edge of the water. I saw fish leaping out of the water and into the air earlier. Maybe if I get lucky I'll be able to shoot one down.
My twelve year old companion plops down on a rock.
"Do you think I can hit a fish with my slingshot?" she squeals suddenly, tearing her weapon from her back pocket. I laugh and load an arrow into my bow string.
"You can knock it from the air," I reply, "But you'll have to watch it flop around in the grass until it dies. That will be tragic." Karine's face falls.
"Oh," she says, "Then can I try your bow?"
I look into her hopeful grey eyes. "Sure."
"Score!" Karine celebrates, marching up to me and ripping my bow from my hands.
"Hey, hey, hey!" I protest, snatching it back, "No stealing. It's not nice. I'll let you borrow my bow when I've got us some dinner."
"I can get us dinner just as good as you!" Karine smirks.
"Maybe, I wouldn't know," I laugh, "Now I'm serious. Be quiet." Karine nods her head obidiently and sits back down on her rock.
I concentrate on the water. There's a splash not far from us.
"I saw one Olivi!" Karine hisses, "I saw a fish jump out of the ocean!"
"I heard it," I whisper, "Now shhhhhhhhhhhh." Karine bites her lip.
I draw the shaft back to the corner of my mouth, slowly breathing out. It's not long before another fish leaps from the sea. It's a nice range. I loose my arrow and it goes streaking into the shallow water several feet from us.
Karine immediately flies from her place on the rock into the sea. She carefully wades out to place where my arrow came down. I see her hand plunge under the water and re-surface holding my shaft. Motionless at the tip is a gleaming trout.
The young tribute grins. "You got it!"
"Yeah, I've done it before," I point out.
"Cool!" Karine says, smiling wider yet.
I catch two more smaller fish, before finally handing the bow to Karine. She grabs it right away along with an arrow from my quiver. I can tell she has never even held one before she takes it upside down in her hands and tries to fit the arrow in the string backwards. I laugh and inform her of the proper way to hold the weapon. Karine listens carefully through the entire lesson I give her.
