Anemae smirks at me.
"Poor Olivi," she sneers, "So clueless, she's gone firing her arrows off into the sunset." The tribute girl from District Seven giggles shrilly, while Anemae's fellow tribute only snickers.
I gulp. Anemae has a point. I can't believe I was stupid enough to let that arrow loose.
I tighten my grip on the bow string.
"And I suppose you just came here to chat all night?" I say, curling my lip.
"Chat?" Anemae laughs, "No, I came here because you and your little friends are the only people left in this arena who stand in the way of my victory."
"What about the Careers?" Daze asks.
"The Careers are a joke," Anemae explains, "Outsmarting them will be easy. But first, I need you out of my way." I can almost feel every member of my alliance shifting their aim on Anemae, who approaches with menacing steps.
"It's not going to be easy," Ilslie growls.
"Oh no, you'll be much harder than the Careers," Anemae assures us, "Once you're gone, my victory will be imminent." She smiles poisonously and draws her own bow. I can't help but notice a sponsor must have sent her another sack of arrows, because her quiver definetley holds more than half a dozen.
"Hold your ground," Ilslie warns us, sounding like an army general. Anemae shoots her first arrow at me, but I am inticipating it. After dropping to my stomach, I immediately spring up again, firing my shaft at the boy from Six's head. He's dull enough to shield himself with his arms. Once I see the puncture in his left wrist, I know my mark is good enough. He can't fight with that wound.
"Careful, Olivi!" Ilslie shouts at me, and I hear the arrow hissing towards me. I think I'm finished, but Brite's sword comes slashing out of no where and knocks the arrow to the ground.
"Thanks," I mutter.
"Yep," he says, happily. Anemae, trembling with fury, has now dropped her bow. She and her ally from Seven explode into action, suddenly wielding serrated hunting knives, while the boy from Six cowers in the corner. Daze and Ilslie take on the girl from Seven, while Brite and I await Anemae's ambush.
"How good are you at hand-to-hand, Four?" Brite asks me, through clenched teeth.
"Good enough, One," I scowl back.
"Great," he comments, not sounding sarcastic.
Anemae swings her knife at me, but Brite intercepts it with his blade. I've never truly seen Brite in action with his sword before now. This kid is good. He blocked every jab Anemae is throwing in his direction. I almost feel like he's trying to protect me...
Thanks for the thought, but I don't need protection.
When Brite perrys hard, Anemae's knife clatters to the ground. I have just enough time to slam into her with enough to knock her to the grass. Before you can say a word, the tip of Brite's sword is at her throat.
But she justs laughs. Her knife comes twirling out of no where, this time taking Brite's sword down. And she's attacking him with stabs and slashs of all kinds. Brite's pretty good at dodging them all, but I can tell he's getting tired.
I reach my hand into the action and snatch Anemae's wrist, giving it the hardest twist I can. When she wails in pain, I know I've found her limit. I kick her as hard as I can in the shins and she screams.
At the same time, her fellow tribute lets out a screech. Karine is working magic with her slingshot and pelting his head with a shower of pebbles.
The Girl From Seven doesn't like this. She charges Karine, but Karine is ready.
