The next day I search for Daze and Karine. They stand at the sword station practicing some basic stabs and slashes, but when I move to join them they drop their swords and shuffle away quickly. I pick up Daze's sword and ask the instructor to guide me a bit. I do swordplay for the next hour, sweating like I just jumped in the ocean.

Swords aren't my strongest suit.

Daze and Karine avoid me for the whole day, even at lunch. When I grab my usual seat next to them, they stand and transfer to another empty table. I sit by myself.

Garren stops to visit me for a quick minute with his lunch tray. I say nothing to him, but he starts a conversation anyway.

"I visited Brite this morning," he says. Oh gosh, here it comes. "He's awake and shocked. He won't tell anyone many details though. All he said was that he was attacked." Phew.

"They haven't figured anything out?" I don't look up at Garren.

"It's a total mystery," Garren responds, grimly, "But when I find out who did it, I'm going to wring their neck." Oh no, he won't. It's time for me to be honest. And of course to get him to be afraid of me.

"Then you're going to have to wring mine!" I say, defiantly but only so Garren can hear me.

"What?" Garren's pale face shows signs of confusion. "You can't have possibly-"

"Yes," I breath, "Yes, I did." I can see Garren is fighting hard to keep his hot chocolate in his mouth. He forces himself to swallow it, then looks at me, half-scared, half-blown away. There is no anger in his expression, only surprise.

"What?" he repeats, "But that's not possible! Brite said his attacker grabbed him by the neck and shoved him up against the wall. He said he was dangling a foot off the ground! But Olivi, how-"

"I climb trees to the top without using my feet," I cut in, "Does that answer your question?"

"Well," he thinks about it, "A bit, but-"

"Can we not talk about this anymore?" I interupt him again.

"Yeah," he agrees, "So all ready for the private sessions then?"

"Mhm," I hardly look up from my lunch.

"Okay," he says, "You going to shoot?" I look up at him.

"Of course not!" I snarl, sarcastically, "I'm going to stick forks in my eyes!"

"You are?" Garren is surprised, "Oh wait, that was sarcasm, wasn't it?"

"Nooooooooooooo!" I cock my head. Once again, sarcasm included. Garren chuckles weakly.

"Hey Olli," he ventures, "Maybe you should think twice about keeping archery a secret. The rest of Careers...well...they want to know a little more about you before we all join up. And they let their strengths become known. Antonius and I use spears. Ilslie, her knives. Brite, a sword. Amethyste, her ax." I snicker at the thought of Miss Panem with trying to wield an ax. "We've got nothing to hide, Olli. It's all for the fear factor!"

"Number One," I begin, "No. No, I am not sharing my archery strengths with them just yet. They'll know how well I can shoot when I send arrows through their necks in the arena. Number Two, I never said I was teaming up with you and your little Career pack. They're all idiots, especially Brite."

"Olli," Garren pleads, "If you'd just give him a chance-"

"Shut up and let me finish!" I snap, "Number Three, prissy Miss Perfection uses an ax?"

"Yeah," Garren says, shrugging and looking half amused himself, "She's not fantastic with any weapon but if any one did stand out, it's definatley the ax."
