"No!" I am kneeling down next to Brit before you can drop a hat. She drops to the ground and slowly extracts the bloody arrow from her rib cage. I glance over at Anemae who is supporting the girl from Seven. The arrow didn't kill her, but if she doesn't get treatment soon, she'll die. Anemae, her fellow tribute, and the injured girl hobble out of the clearing and disappear into the thick of the woods.
"Olivi?" Brit looks up at me.
"I'm so sorry," I croak, "This is all my fault. If only I had shot sooner-"
"It's not your fault Anemae has sharp aim," Brit assures me.
"I'm never going to forgive myself!" I wail, "I can't believe-"
"Olivi."
"-oh, it's all my fault-"
"OLIVI!"
"What?" I ask.
"I'm going to be okay," Brit says.
"Y-you are?" I ask, just to be one hundred percent sure I'm not dreaming.
"Yeah, I am," she says, quietly, "I don't think the arrow drove the deep or hit anything vital to my survival. I just need bandages and a little medicine. Then I should be alright."
"What do you think, Hunter?" I ask my mother's cousin. He's been silent ever since Brit was shot. He examines the wound carefully.
"She's right, she'll be fine," he whispers.
"Fantastic," I say, forcing a grin, "Bandages. We need some. Anyone got any?" I look around but the other two shake their heads. My faces fall, but I soon think of something my mother taught me. "Then we'll need a big wad of cobwebs. There should be some somewhere. Hunter?" He nods and dashes off into the woods, muttering "cobwebs" under his breath.
I lay Brit down on some soft moss and hold her hand and sooth her until Hunter returns with an enormous handful of cobwebs. It doesn't take many to stop the blood from flowing, but the wound will be infected soon if we don't get some medicine. Brit sleeps while Hunter and I discuss our situation.
"It's bad luck that Six and Seven know where we are now," Hunter sighs, "We should be expecting another attack."
"Not any time soon though," I point out, "The girl from Seven's injured. Worse than Brit, I think. They need recovery time. By that time, Brit will be recovered too and we can move."
"That's right," Hunter says, deep in thought.
"But right now," I explain, "Our biggest priority is medicine for Brit."
"Yeah," Hunter agrees, "But how are we going to get it? We don't have any sponsors and, even if we did, Capitol medicine is expensive."
"But the sponsors just saw our battle," I say, almost jumping off the log we sit on, "They know we can fight and we can win! Maybe we have one..." I trail off. Hunter is shaking his head.
"I don't think we'll be gaining sponsors anytime soon," he whispers.
"We need that medicine, though!" I exclaim, "We can't just give up and watch Brit die!"
"She won't die," Hunter assures me, "We can feed her and keep up her strength. And I have an idea." I almost scream with excitement. Instead, I lower my voice.
"What?" I ask.
"The Careers," Hunter says softly, "I'll bet you all of our food that they have medicine. Good medicine. From the Horn. I can find them....and I can steal some."
"Honestly, Hunter!" I almost shout, "Are you even thinking? They're not stupid. If you steal the medicine, they'll notice and we're dead meat!" Hunter shushes me.
"I'll only steal a little," Hunter whispers, "I promise. Enough for them not to notice a thing. We need that medicine!"
I consider this for a long hard moment, and then I realize it. He's right. This is our only chance.
"How long do you think it will take for you to find the Careers, take the medicine and come back to us?" Hunter swallows.
"Three days at the most," he answers.
"And what if you die?" I ask, quietly.
"I won't," he responds, "I have to stay alive for Brit."
"Yeah, you do," I say, coldly, "But Brit could be gone in three days. You have to hurry."
"I will," he replies. And we prepare a small bag for him, filling it with nuts, berries, healing herbs, a little cobweb in case he should be wounded along the way, and some roots. I take off my quiver, which I haven't done since I opened it in the tree. I take a deep breath and pull out the slingshot.
This weapon, that was supposed to be in Karine's hands, means the world to me. But now, I feel as if I can trust Hunter with it.
"Here," I croak, and hand it to him.
"You were saving it for Karine," he says, looking puzzled.
"You saw her in training?"
"Yes, I saw her. She was great."
"It was her favorite weapon," I almost cry, nodding, "But I want you to take it on your trip. You can't approach the Careers unarmed."
"I'll take my club," Hunter says, quickly, "You don't have to-"
"You'll need long distance, too," I interupt, "These are the Careers we're talking about! Killing machines! Take it, but bring it back! And then when Brit is healed and we find Karine, we'll give it to her." Hunter nods in agreement. He grasps the slingshot and sticks it in his pack.
"Take care of Brit," he whispers and pulls me into a hug. It's not a romantic hug.
It's a hug that two relatives should have shared years ago.
"Be safe," I remark, "See ya."
"See ya," he says back.
And with that, he runs off into the dark of the forest.
