Days had passed since Alfie, one of our best warriors, had passed away. It didn't seem fair, but he was unmated so his mate could get another mate in this life, and the original mated pair would have a shot in their next life. Though that was a rumor I had heard. Sitting in my office, I was awakened by the sun in my eyes this morning. Alex, though, slept like the dead, or she had nightmares; there was never an in-between; it never failed when a nightmare happened; she would become on her guard with her eyes closed. I wanted to know what she was dreaming of, but she always moved on, as if nothing had happened when she was awakened. I was training myself not to push into her space too much, so I'd rubbed her hand to calm her down.

Alex stayed in my room again. 'forever,' Sam growled. It was perfect protection, and I loved having her in my bed. Looking at the clock, it was 8:30 AM, and it seemed to stand still until Alex came to the door and cracked it open. "Sorry, I, um, just wanted to see what to do because no one else is awake."

Her rambling was cute. I knew she wanted to see me but didn't want to admit it. "I trust you." I wanted her to feel like she hadn't become a prisoner here, but still feared for her safety.

Her face was shocked, but she smiled. "Thank you," she said, starting to close the door.

Halfway through, I began again: "I have around 20 minutes to finish a transfer document, and then I will be down."She nodded, closing the door, and I could hear her go down the stairs.

Ten minutes had passed as I was about to finish one of my pack warriors' transfer papers. Kyle walked in, his hands folded in his pockets. "The transfer for the mates?." One of our warriors had found their mate and would go to another pack. It happened from time to time, and I was happy for them.

Closing the file in front of me, I asked. "Is Beth awake?"

"yeah, we were waiting for Alex to wake up, and I thought I'd see if you need anything."he smiled at me.

Sitting straighter and meeting his gaze. "Alex isn't downstairs?." I asked, feeling my anger rise.

"I didn't see her." He answered with a concerned look, crossing his face.

"dammit," I growled, passing him in a flash as I almost flung my chair against the wall to get up. Starting down the stairs two at a time, I looked around. Beth sat on one of the couches, looking at her phone.

"hi, Marcus," she greeted.

"Alex left," I growled.

"What?" She asked, looking up at me from her phone. "I just saw her a minute ago."

"where!" I bit, my nerves were on fire.

"she was going outside but passed through here to the bathroom." I loved Beth for the info. Running to the bathroom and knocking, I didn't get a response.

"dammit," I growled, kicking in the door in, but it was empty. A slight growl came from my lips as I returned to the living room.

"She wasn't in there," I huffed.

"What?" Beth asked, watching me in a panicked state.

I looked around, spotting her. Back to us in the front yard past our many cars. Without a thought, I crossed the length to get to her and followed as Kyle stood on the porch.

"Alex," I breathed, putting a hand on her shoulder.

She turned, holding a white flower. "Sorry, I was enjoying nature," she said calmly, giving me a half smile. Red caught My attention. A 2-inch slit sat down the side of her chin.
