As I returned home from the grocery store, I was taken aback to see the local police department in my family's living room. Their presence and their quiet conversations told me immediately that something was wrong. As I nervously walked in and sat the groceries on the counter, I cautiously approached them."Umm, can I help you guys or something?" I asked confused as I hopped to shed some light on what they were doing in my house.
One of the deputies, whose name tag read William, looked at me instantly "Are you Katelynn Baxter?" He asked me I was a little surprised by how he knew me but didn't think about it too much. "Yeah, I am, why?"
Without saying a word the female officer gestured for me to take a seat on the couch. Her gentle touch on my hand guided me to the seat beside her. Before continuing, she handed me a small box, "Before I say anything, I want to give you something that your mom told us to give you."
As I opened the box, I saw my mother's wedding and engagement ring inside. "Why are you handing me this?" I asked as I tilted my head as my voice was filled with confusion.
"I'm sorry to tell you this, but unfortunately your mother Hollie Minchey, your Stepfather Johnathan Minchey, and your brother Colton Minchey were in a car crash earlier this afternoon. And your mom and stepdad didn't make it," She said looking at me as I felt tears pouring down my face. "So I guess me and Colton will be living with my dad," I said as I tried to hold back the tears that were wanting to spill.
An officer then glanced at the female officer then turned towards the front door. "About that, Hazel you can come in now" the officer called out. A young lady then entered the house while she held a folder in her hands. "Hello Katelynn, my name is Hazel and I'm your social worker," Hazel said.
"So I take it that me and my brother will be living with my dad and stepmom now," I asked Hazel as I stood up. "Actually you guys won't be living with him at all because he's isn't your biological father. He isn't related to you in any way." I then sat there, dumbfounded as I was overstimulated, and realized I basically just lost another family member.
"You actually will be living full time with your brothers who-"
"Pardon me did you say brothers?" I said cutting her off as my brain tried to process what she just said. "I only have two brothers and one is 2 and the other is 6 so what other brothers are you talking about." Hazel then cast me a pitiful glance as she held my hands. "I'm sorry sweetheart but you do have another family in China. Yichen Liu, your eldest brother is now the legal guardian of both you and Colton." She kindly informed me.
I was so overwhelmed that I collapsed back onto the couch, and my thoughts were spinning in a whirlwind of confusion and pain. I then slipped my mother's ring on and found comfort in it. "Your trip to China will be leaving in an hour. Once you've packed yours and your brother's belonging a car will pick you up and take you to the airport" she informed me.
I then quickly went to my moms and Jonathan's room and took one of my mom's bag where I found a usb stick, I just ignored it for now and took some of mom's and Jonathan's things to remember them by like Jonathan's knives and guns and my mom's crocheting bag including everything she's ever crocheted.
I then went to my bags and brought some of my clothes, my art supplies, stuffed animals, my bow and arrows, and my guitar. I then went over to my brothers room and backed some of his stuff.
After I was done the car was already waiting for me so I headed down my driveway and got into the limo where I saw that my brother was already buckled in.
