The scenery of Pen-Gu island was stunning. A vast change of pace from your icy and snowy home of Antarctica. Definitely warmer too.
The greenery was beautiful, the trees casting natural shade to cool off the penguins that lazed underneath them. The sand below your feet was soft. It very vaguely reminded of the snow back home. Except, well, it wasn't frigid.
You didn't come to surf, no. You came as a lifeguard. Or you suppose, to help lifeguard. Only having one penguin on high alert seemed like a bad idea. So why not bring in a second?
You may not be the best at surfing but you were a killer swimmer. Years of helping your parents hunt for your younger siblings definitely helped.
Lani was nice. She was the lifeguard you'd been asked to help.
She'd given you your own squid and she's spoken to you about the more egregious dangers of the water. Some parts of the bottom were more rocky than others, making it more dangerous for penguins to get swept under the waves.
You'd definitely seen your fair share of monster waves and nasty storms. It was a perk of living on the coast. You knew to be wary of them even if you were confident you could swim through it.
Coming as an assistant lifeguard meant you got there a few weeks before the surfers. Plenty of time to get used to the waters and weather of the small island. You'd even gotten to wander through the forest against the sand line a couple times.
You also got stuck helping set up some of the booths, much to your chagrin. You found yourself making faces at the sea otter as soon as he turned his back to you whenever he directed you to do something. Something Lani thought was hilarious.
The first wave of surfers came in. It was a penguin on the second wave that caught your attention. He had yellow feathers just above his eyes. He was the first rockhopper penguin you'd seen since you got here. Stranger even was the chicken who hopped off with him.
Lani got to hear all about him. Maybe he reminded you of home or maybe there was something else. Something you couldn't quite put your flipper on.
The day the penguin challenged Tank to a surf off was the day you realized he was a fool. And you were foolishly crushing on him. Lani and you were on the bank, waiting for something to go wrong. And you were glad you were ready.
The rockhopper toppled off his board and went under with a wave. Lani gave the save to you. You tug him from the ocean bed, sliding him onto the life board before beginning to push him back towards shore.
He'd been knocked out and you could already see the spine of a sea urchin in his foot. A couple chest compressions had him coughing water up- all this while other penguins, Reggie, and his little camera crew crowded around you.
He was only conscious for a moment before he fell back into the sand. Lani crouched down next to you, letting out a sigh as she shook her head.
The second time you met the penguin, you'd learned his name. You'd stopped by Zeke's hut to check on him. He was awake, much to your surprise. You'd introduced yourself and he did the same. Cody.
Cody was awake and lively the following days, seemingly more than happy to carry on conversations with you. Zeke had basically confirmed one day, huffing about how Cody couldn't sit still and would ask if you were stopping by that day. You'd never tell Cody you knew that though.
The day Lani and you went to Zeke's hut to see the two and you found it empty sent fear through you. You'd nearly been sent into a panic before Lani's flipper was on your shoulder, leading you back out of the hut and into the forest. Maybe it was foolish to follow her deeper to the other side of the island- you still did it.
