Y/n POVI slowly walked down the stairs. I overheard them all talking. I sat on the stairs listening. Some new guy was here. He was tall and he looked scary.
"If you had all that you could save him?" I heard Rick say, the dad of the boy that was shot.
"If I had all that, I could try." Grandpa told him. No one noticed me. I sat close to the railing and i practically held on to it.
"Nearest hospital went up in flames a month ago. The highschool" Uncle Ottis said as he looked at Grandpa.
"That's what I was thinking. They set up a fema shelter there. They would have everything we need." Grandpa said as he looked at Rick.
"Place was over on last time I saw it. You couldn't get near it. Maybe it's better now." Uncle Ottis said as he looked around.
"I said, leave the rest to me. Is it too late to take that back?" The scary man asked Rick.
"I hate you going alone." Rick said as he looked at the man. It seemed to be like they were friends.
"Come on" The man said as he shook his head. "Doc, why don't you do me a list and draw me a map?"
"You won't need a map. I'll take you there. Aunt but fine miles" Uncle Ottis told him.
"Ottis, no" Aunt Patrica said quickly.
"Honey, we don't have time for guesswork and I'm responsible. I ain't gonna sit here while this fella takes this on alone. I'll be alright" Uncle Ottis said as he looked around.
"Are you sure about this?" The scary man asked Uncle Ottis.
"Do you even know what any of the stuff he's talking about it looks like?" Uncle Ottis asked the scary man nicely.
"Come to think, no" The scary man answered honestly.
"I've been a volunteer E.M.T. I do. We can talk about this till next Sunday or we could just go do it real quick." Uncle Ottis offered,
"I'll take right quick." The scary guy said as he nodded along.
"I should thank you" Rick said as he looked at Uncle Ottis.
"Wait till that boy of yours is up and around. Then we'll talk. I'll gather some things." Uncle Ottis said before he left the room with Aunt Patricia trailing behind him.
"Where is she, your wife?" Mom asked Rick as she walked closer to him.
I jumped up and ran over to mom and hugged her leg. I didn't want her to go. She smiled and patted me on the back as Rick was telling her where to find to find her.
As soon as Rick and Grandpa left the room mom kneeled down to me and she put her hands on my shoulders.
"It's going to be okay, baby. I promise now, stay with Grandpa or Aunt Patrica and don't leave their sight." She said as she kissed me on the forehead. I nodded my head. I watched her leave on one of our horses before I went to find Grandpa.
I hugged Uncle Ottis goodbye and then ran over to Grandpa and held his hand. We watched as they got into the car and drove off. I later learned that the strange man's name was Shane.
"Lest check on your boy" Grandpa said as he pulled me inside along with him.
...
I stayed inside in the living room as I looked out the window waiting for mom to come back. It had only been a couple hours and I was starting to get worried. I watched as Rick and Grandpa went outside to talk.
I went over to the boys room, who I always found out his name was Carl. It was a good name and it fit him. I walked over and sat down on one of the empty seats.
He looked peaceful while he was sleeping, his freckles and dark hair covered his face. He was breathing good which I knew that is how he was still alive.
I touched his hand and smiled at him. When he wakes up, I hope these people stay long. It would be nice to have a friend.
I jumped when I saw a lady come into the room. She quickly ran over to the bed and I quickly ran out before she could say something. I assumed it was Carl's mom.
I walked out into the living room and I found mom standing there. She was talking to grandpa and I ran up and hugged her. She smiled and hugged me back.
I wasn't good with words but I knew this was enough. I heard crying from Carls room and I was worried that he wasn't going to be okay.
Later on that night, I sat on the porch floor playing with dolls, from the light off the house. My mom was sitting on one of the rocking chairs. We heard a a car pull up and two people walked out.
I moved over and sat closer to mom as I watched them walk towards us. There was one man with a hurt arm and then another man carrying stuff.
"So do we ring the bell?" I heard the younger man asked. I stayed quiet and watched them. "I mean it looks like people live here."
"We're past this kind of stuff, aren't we?" His friend asked. He had a blanket wrapped over his shoulders and he looked sick. "Having to be considerate." They said as they walked up.
"Did you close the gate up the road when you drove in?" I heard mom ask form behind me. She had her hand placed on my shoulder and rubbed in softly.
"Uh, hi. Yes, we closed it. Did the latch and everything. Hello. Nice to see you again. We met before briefly." The younger man said. I washed as my mom got up and I walked up and held on to her hand.
"Look, we came to help. There anything we can do?" The older man asked as he winced at his arm. "It's not a bite. I cut myself pretty bad though."
"We'll have to looked at. I'll tell them you're here"Mom said as she gently pulled me along with her.
"We have some painkillers and antibiotics. I already she him some. If Carl needs any." The younger man said as he held some out of hands.
"Come on inside, I'll make you something to eat" Mom said as she opened up the door and let me walk through first.
