Hey you. I hope this chapter makes up for the last one a little bit - I think I'd rather stick with my favorite couple ;) It just feels better :) The road isn't long anymore either. Have fun reading.

>Sam's POV<

I was just making myself something to eat and enjoyed having some peace and quiet for once. Every evening someone came over, sometimes several. It was nice that the old friends had remained loyal and were so obviously happy about my return and yet too much had changed, too much had happened without me being able to do anything about it and now I had to accept it as it was. The death of my father, whose cancer, like Steele's wife's, was discovered too late to be successfully treated. I'd missed seeing the twins grow up, and Elvis and Ellie's start to their relationship and how it progressed had certainly been an experience too - Penny and I would have had a lot of fun watching them getting together... Which led me to the worst thing I could ever do, to had to accept that Penny was married and I had lost her. I had never dared to confess my feelings to her because I was afraid that I would lose her as a friend. Now I had lost her because I didn't do it and disappeared. I couldn't help but wonder if it would have made a difference if I had been able to say it the way I wanted before using it at the mill. Would she have waited for me then?

I sighed in annoyance when the doorbell rang. I didn't feel like visiting today. I actually just wanted to mope around after, against my better judgment, I couldn't resist watching the team from a safe distance during an operation today. Penny had been perfect. As always.

And that was the problem. All my thoughts revolved around her. I couldn't get away from her, no matter how hard I forced myself to give up. I wanted nothing more than to at least be able to talk to her, wanted our friendship back. For that I would gladly accept that she belonged to another man. Well, I wouldn't love to lie, but I would accept it. After all I had always put our friendship above the fear of losing her if I confessed my feelings to her. Did it then matter that I just had to eat it in for a little longer?! If Polonium actually got the time machine rebuilt, I would put my current knowledge to use as soon as I got back to my time.

"Penny?!" was all I could say when I opened the door and saw the woman of my dreams and my sleepless nights - especially since I was stranded in this time - standing in front of me. I was least expecting her."Do you like...What can I do..." Jesus, Sam! Get a hold of yourself! "I mean, do you want to come in?" I took a step aside and made room for her invitingly. She seemed nervous and her brief smile seemed embarrassed as she came in.

"Are you cooking?" she then asked me and turned back to me as I closed the door behind her, as if she didn't really know what to do or where to go - well, I didn't know that either right.

"Um, yes, Pencakes. Do you like some too?"

"Pencakes? Don't you eat them for breakfast?" she asked me skeptically, but she smiled a little mischievously. A little of the old Penny shone through again and that immediately relaxed me immensely.

"Not if you top it with hearty toppings. You get the first one."

"The way it smells here, at best the garbage can gets the first one, at worst the fire department gets it." Only then did I realize what it smelled like and I ran around the kitchen counter to the stove in a panic. I quickly took the pencake out of the pan and we examined the coal-black side when she caught up with me. The worktop was wider here and protruded on its side, so that thanks to the bar stools on its side it looked more like a bar counter than a dining table, but it was still practical. "Excuse me," Penny said, embarrassed while she unpacked Mira from the carrier, who had started to whine, and I spotted a smile at the corner of her mouth as I put batter back into the pan.

"For what?" I asked in surprise as I sprinkled the prepared ingredients in the form of sliced ham and grated cheese onto the still liquid top of the dough.
