As the first vibrant light of dawn kissed the sky once again with its hues of pink and mellow, Aiden stood at the head of his army, embracing his leadership and authority, his heart pounding with anticipation and dormant adrenaline awaiting for action as they prepared to march to the kingdom of Umbra. The journey to the western border was fraught with tension and worry, each mile bringing them closer to the edge of enemy territory. Along the way, they encountered villages crippled by Kael's forces, their homes reduced to complete rotten ruins and their fields drought from water. The resemblance was uncanny towards the recent battle.
As they neared ever so closely to the border, Aiden called a halt to the march, gathering his commanders around him to finalize their plans for the attack. Worn maps were spread out on makeshift tables, illuminated by the warm orange flickering light of torches, as they discussed strategies to weaken Kael's hold on the region. Aiden's eyes mirrored the fire of the torches perfectly, his burning passion for completing this mission was dearly desired by him.
"Our main objective is to capture the fortress of Shadowcrest," Aiden declared, placing his finger at its location on the old crinkly map. His voice rang out with authority, "It is the key to Umbra's defences, and if we can seize it, we will be one step closer to victory."
The commanders nodded in agreement, their faces miserable with the task before them as they understood the danger and the countless risks. Shadowcrest was a formidable stronghold, its walls manned by Kael's most loyal soldiers and fortified with dark magic that made it nearly impervious to attack. But Aiden knew that they could not afford to falter now, not when the fate of their kingdom hung on the thin string of their pathetic choices.
With their plans secure in place, Aiden and his army pressed wearingly slowly towards the border, their minds crippled with the weight of the danger which was about to be underway, understanding the fatality and bloodshed to come; but their spirits not yet shattered. As they reached the outskirts of Umbra, the air grew unbearable— thick with an uncomfortable sense of suspense, the shadows loomed ever larger... casting an impeccable indication of doom as they drew closer to their enemy's domain.
But even as they prepared to face the uncertain fate which sat patiently to greet them, Aiden's head throbbed intensely as his growing frustration could not shake the feeling that there was something more at play here... something sneakily lurking beneath the slim surface of the conflict that threatened to enshroud them all. As he rode at the head of his army, his mind raced with never ending thoughts of ancient prophecies— old tales and stories which he grew up with, words that were fed to him, inevitably, causing a downfall into the line of a loathing clockwork...
Aiden just couldn't shake that intense sense of unsettling dismay that chose to suddenly settle over him like a heavy wet cloak, clinging to his body. The land seemed to hold its breath still... as if waiting for the impending clash between the forces of Lumina and Umbra. Aiden clutched onto his horse's reins with stress, 'Why in this moment? When I must think straight...' he sighed to himself, moving his hand to push his golden hair back as a way to distract himself from his thoughts.
Regaining some of his composure, Aiden raised his hand which was clad in reflective silver armour; a silent command. He signalled for his troops to halt and lay steady. Almost in an instant, the sound of the armour's light clanks ceased, and in place; the air crackled with rigid anticipation. Each present soldier was brave and honourable, sacrificing themselves for their country, understanding the possible outcome of their fates.
But even as they readied their weapons, bracing themselves for the onslaught, Aiden's thoughts found themselves chained to the man who stood at the heart of this conflict: Prince Kael, his sworn enemy and the tyrannical ruler of Umbra, the very man who threatened everything Aiden stood for. For years, Aiden had harboured absolutely nothing but resentment for this prince of no morals, taught to his very core to believe that he was the very embodiment of utter evil in this world.
