Something was wrong.
I felt it, Ghost was being too quiet, I could no longer see him in the window of the house. My eyes desperately searched with the binoculars, Gaz looking down the scope of his rifle.
"Lieutenant? How copy?" Gaz muttered into his radio. There was nothing on the other line, nothing. Something was wrong.
My fingers drummed on the windowsill that we were sitting at, concerned; any other emotion was completely washed out of my mind and body.
That's when I saw the shadow behind the house. Multiple of them.
"Gaz, behind the house - backyard." I said quietly, acting as if I was the one in danger, the one that needed to stay hidden. I saw Gaz point his rifle over there and then nod in confirmation.
"Fuck." It was a sharp whisper, Gaz rubbing the bridge of his nose. "We need to head in, Alex." He stood up and started tightening his gear. "Now."
I got up to my feet and nodded. "How the hell are we doing this?"
We rushed down the stairs of the watch house, our boots thudding loudly against the wooden steps. Gaz, usually so playful, was now all seriousness, his face set in a grim expression.
"I'll go in through the back, sneak in somehow," he said, glancing over at me.
"No, no. I can go. You should go through the front."
He began to respond, but we were interrupted by the unmistakable sound of gunfire... not once, not twice, but three times in quick succession. Gaz nodded quickly.
My heart pounded. I hadn't been back in action since Danny. I hadn't done this since Danny. I could almost hear Matt's voice in my head, "STOP FOCUSING ON DANNY." Maybe he was right, just this once.
I crept around the house. No one seemed to be outside anymore. Avoiding the stairs, I pulled myself onto the porch, wary of the boards creaking under my boots and giving me away.
I peeked through the door. Ghost stood there, his arm locked around Haruki's throat, holding him tight while pointing his gun forward. Haruki struggled, yelling and kicking against Ghost's grip.
My eyes shifted to the door behind them, where a man dressed in all black aimed a gun at the back of Ghost's head. Ghost didn't even realize the danger looming behind him.
"No, no, no," I muttered urgently, standing up and aiming my own silenced gun. Ghost's eyes met mine briefly, filled with confusion, before I fired three quick shots, eliminating the threat behind him.
The body hit the floor with a thud. Ghost spun around, his eyes wide behind his mask as he stared at the fallen enemy. Haruki seized the moment to elbow Ghost sharply, and more men poured into the house.
