Oh. My. Gosh. This is not good. What do we do? Why are they here? Amy thought as she started pacing back and forth.
Sophie and Keefe rushed over to her collapsed parents.
Sophie looked up at Amy, panic written among her features. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know you guys were here." A tear slipped down her cheek. She quickly swiped at it, but Keefe was faster.
He took her face in his hands and said softly, "Sophie, listen to me. This isn't your fault, okay? It's just a coincidence."
She shook her head. "No. This is my fault. I took us here."
Amy was surprised she could understand what they were saying, even though it was a language that definitely wasn't English. It was what they elves spoke. The Enlightened Language if she remembered correctly.
Amy had so many questions, and although her parents were still laying on the ground and many people had stopped what they were doing to watch the scene, she couldn't help but ask one of them, "Are you guys together?" she blurted.
They looked up at her. Sophie blushed, but Keefe gave a small smirk. "Yup. Why?"
"Just curious." Amy knew it wasn't any of her business, but they were super cute together. She never said anything to Sophie before, but Amy had been rooting for Team Foster-Keefe since her first time in the Lost Cities, when her parents were taken by Vespera. Speaking of her parents...
Amy glanced at them again, but quickly looked away after seeing their pained faces. They were, no doubt, reliving the torture they'd endured in Nightfall.
"Ummm...not to kill the mood, but we need get out of here." Amy said, pointing to all of the staring tourists.
"Where do we take them?" Sophie asked.
"I'm not sure," Keefe said. "Havenfield?"
He stood up from where he was sitting down beside Sophie. He let out a long sigh before hoisting up Amy's dad. "I'll get her dad. You guys can get her mom. Use your telekinesis a bit to help too, Sophie."
Sophie just nodded, standing up to help Amy lift her up.
They walked as quickly as they could to the nearest alleyway. But before they could get there, a loud siren blared, making Amy's ears ring.
A young man–no older than thirty years old–jumped out of the cop car that had just arrived, blocking their path. He was aiming a gun at them. "Stop right there and put your hands up. You three are under arrest for kidnapping."
They stopped walking, but made no move to set Amy's parents down.
Amy heard Keefe curse under his breath as more cop cars pulled up.
We're going to have to make a run for it. Amy jumped and let out a small squeak as her sister's voice filled her head.
Keefe turned around and locked eyes with Sophie, giving her a small nod.
Sophie must have done some telepathy mind trick thingy because seconds later, Keefe's voice also filled Amy's head.
How? he asked. They've got guns.
Thanks Captain Obvious, Amy chimed in.
You guys run. I'll distract them. Sophie said.
What? Keefe exclaimed. Are you crazy? He held her stare, but she didn't back down.
Amy realized for the first time just how much Sophie had changed from the nerdy, annoying older sister she knew. She was taller, with an air of confidence, and yet, her eyes held a brokenness beyond what Amy could understand. Was she even still her sister? A pang went through Amy's heart at the thought.
I–We, Keefe corrected himself, can't just leave you here.
I have to. Don't worry, I've got a plan. I'll be okay.
No. Sophie, I can't just let you–
"Did you here me?"
They whipped around to find several policemen standing in front of them, guns trained on the trio. The impatient young officer, who was currently standing at the front of the group, spoke up again.
"I said, put your hands up! You all are coming with me."
Sophie turned back to Keefe and Amy with a desperate look in her eyes.
You guys go. I've got them. Keefe, help Amy with her mom, another pang in Amy's heart, and leap to Havenfield. Then, hail Mr. Forkle and our friends. Tell them to come over for an emergency meeting. I'll be there in a little bit.
Keefe looked like he wanted to argue, but said nothing. Tears threatened to spill over, but–other than that–he looked calm.
He hesitated, but finally relented, Please be careful.
I will. But the words were hallow and meaningless.
Sophie looked back and forth between Keefe and Amy. I love you guys.
Love you too, they replied in unison.
Sophie gave Emma completely over to Amy–with Keefe using a bit of telekinesis to help–as the guns aimed at them suddenly exploded. The officers stared at their hands, before erupting into complete chaos.
Keefe and Amy took that as their cue to run, and broke into a sprint toward the alleyway.
Boom.
The cop cars exploded behind them.
And Sophie was still there.
Tears streaked Amy's cheeks, but she kept running. She couldn't afford to slow down. Her parents' lives were on the line. She couldn't let Sophie's sacrifice be in vain.
Don't think that way, she chided herself. Sophie's been through so much already, she'll be okay. She knows what she's doing.
They made it to the alleyway, but didn't slow down.
She'll be okay.
Breathe in.
She'll be okay.
Breathe out.
She'll be okay.
One foot in front of the other.
They ran behind the shop, and Keefe pulled out a clear crystal. He held it up to the afternoon sunlight, creating a glow in front of them on the pavement.
"Grady and Sandor are gonna kill me," Amy heard Keefe mutter under his breath.
She grabbed his hand, and as they stepped into the light and began to disappear a scream pierced the air.
An unmistakably female scream.
She shared a glance with Keefe, her blood frozen in her veins. Amy's stomach knotted with the realization.
Sophie was in danger.
