“Hey, Eve.” I waved at her and closed the distance between us.
“Hey, Karina. What's up?”
“Same old, same old.” I giggled. “How are you though?” I leaned closer. “How are things with Rex?”
She sighed. Her eyebrows drew together, as her mouth formed a slight pout. “Same old.”
“That lying piece of shit.” I mumbled. It wasn't the first time Rex had cheated on Eve. And it surely wouldn't be the last time. “Why don't you break up with him?”
“Karina… I can't. Not right now.”
I switched topics. Eve and I had been over this at least a hundred times. We always ended with the same conclusion: Now was not the time.
“You coming to the training later?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Eve, c’mon. Don’t make me give you the speech. You know I’ll do it.”
A small giggle left her throat. “Alright. But I think I still could use that speech of yours.”
I breathed out heavily before I started. “You, you’re Samantha Eve Wilkins aka ‘Atom Eve’. You defy the unimaginable with your superpowers and use them for good. You ma’am are not gonna miss training today or I will drag you there, on your ass, with my bare hands.”
The bell rang just as I finished my last words.
“Thank you.” Just by her tone and posture, I could tell that Eve was feeling a bit better.
“Mauler Twins attack the White House? Nuts, right?”
“I saw.”
I stumbled in between my steps. Eve besides me had to keep herself from laughing.
William just looked at me for the split of a second until he returned back to his conversation with Mark Grayson.
“I can't believe the Guardians of the Globe let them get that close to killing the president.”
I rolled my eyes at him. They didn't even get into the building.
“They didn't even get into the building. And Omni-Man was there too.”
“You're such an Omni-Maniac. Way to root for the underdog. Big fan of the Yankees, are you?”
We both slightly giggled at Williams' comment, soon parting ways. Eve had history class while I had to attend algebra.
“Knock it off, Todd.”
Not again.
About every couple days, Todd found another girl he would harass in the school's hallways. Though, I wasn't sure how much Amber Bennet would tolerate his bullshit. I came to a halt, close to them in case Todd decided to make things ugly. I took out my phone, pretending to write something.
“Come on… Quit playing games. I know you're crazy about me. Marcy told me.
“Well, you are big and strong, aren't you…?” Todd flexed his muscles. What an idiot.
“You know it.”
“And you think that makes it okay for you to harass me?”
Amber turned around and tried to walk away. Todd however had other plans. He grabbed her by her arm which she yanked away from him.
“Hey, don't walk away from me. What, are you a lesbian or something?”
“Oh, my god, I wish! Would you leave me alone then?”
Amber tried walking away again Todd grabbed her by her arm. Again.
“Let go of me so I can go find a girl to kiss!”
“Alright, Todd. Fuck off. Leave Amber alone.” I said as I put my phone into my back pocket.
From the corner of my eye I saw Mark and William watching us. Mark looked like he wanted to intervene as well.
“Keep out of this, Hart.”
“Or what, you're gonna punch me?”
“Nah I don't punch girls.” He took a step back.
“Scared you're gonna lose, are we Todd?” His hands balled into fists. His right thumb pulled out of it. He was going to hit me.
My muscles tensed as I slightly leaned back, anticipating his hit.
Todd's hand swung back. And it never swung forward. Mark Grayson held him back.
Mentally, I groaned a bit. I'd been excited for a little action. But it probably was better this way.
“Let me go, Grayson.” Todd quickly turned around to him, visibly annoyed by Mark's interruption.
“No. I think Amber has been pretty clear about how she feels, Todd.”
Instead of punching me, Todd took two hits at him. First at his nose and then at his stomach. Mark clutched his body, groaning in pain until he fell to the ground.
Todd's foot slung back. He wanted to hit Mark once more.
Instead, I held Todd's foot back. I swiftly moved my leg and tripped him up. With a loud slapping sound he landed on the cold stone floor.
Todd groaned as he quickly got up again. “What are you looking at?” He yelled as he finally ran off.
“Hey, Mark. Are you okay?” I asked him.
Mark still was clutching his stomach, standing crouched. William was helping him with standing up. Getting seriously punched in the stomach hurt like a bitch. And without superpowers it did even more. Yikes.
“Yeah, yeah I'm fine.”
“Let me see.” I quickly took a few steps forward and put my hand on his upper arm. I felt my heart in my chest as it started to quicken its speed, pumping blood into my ears.
For just a moment our eyes met. I quickly looked away again. Too embarrassed to hold eye contact with Mark for too long.
I let the mist float through my body and just into my right palm. I couldn't feel anything that seriously hurt him. Todd's hit might leave him with a bruise but nothing serious. Still I tried to heal him just a bit.
He stood up straight, looking at me confused for a short moment.
“I'm glad you're alright.” I gave him a small smile before I turned around and walked to my algebra class. I didn't need Mark, William or Amber suspecting anything. Though, with what I'd just done, they would already suspect enough.
