Rain had started hurling down by the time it came for the memorial, the once thriving lily patch, now bare and dull, sits behind the gazebo which is comfortably covered by its roof. Across from the retreat, the tall, grand statue of Ben stands almost two decades old but still clean and sturdy, staring down on his living family huddled in a half circle in front of the eldest son, Luther.

Pattering of rain falls on the umbrella I hold in my hand, the metal pole resting on my shoulder with a dead weight. I sigh at the rich urn with an unexpected sadness, my eyes burning from the combination of the harsh wind and the tears that threaten to spill. Grateful for the downpour, I had never once felt the need to thank it but now I do because it covered the shunned emotion that none of my siblings let show. The silence is sullen and not a word is shared, only the shuffle of shoes scuffling the floor occasionally along with throats clearing is heard over the rhythm of the rain.

Holding our father's urn forward, Luther begins the ceremony, tipping the grey ashes out, expecting them to spread impressively to the ground, a moment for us all to remember. Instead, they splatter carelessly across the mud, mixing in with it to create a thick off-coloured sludge. The blond looks up at us awkwardly, embarrassed by the attempt "Probably would have been better with some wind." He shies away. Pogo, who stood beside Vanya, who stood aside me, looks amongst us expectedly "Does anyone wish to speak?" The silence is deafening, almost painfully so, everyone looks around to see if any of us has anything inspiring to say about the old man but low and behold no one gains the courage or even the words to describe him.

"Very well." The ape sighs, perhaps impossible for him to conceptualise why there are no positive sentiments about the man, "In all regards, Sir Reginald Hargreeves made me what I am today. For that alone, I shall forever be in his debt. He was my master and my friend, and I shall miss him very much. He leaves behind a complicated legacy-" he is cut off abruptly by Diego "He was a monster."

I scrunch my eyes and turn my head away from my brother, why can't he let things be for once? The others turn to look at him too, Klaus laughing at his abruptness. "He was a bad person and a worse father. The world's better off without him," He finalises brutally, no emotion as he stares down at the disregarded ashes. Even if what he says has some truth, now's not the time. I conclude this with common sense and a quick look at our siblings awkward faces. Allison says his name in warning, not wanting this already stressful day to sour even more. "My name is Number Two. You know why? Because our father couldn't be bothered to give us actual names. He had mom do it," He continues his tangent, looking at all of us individually to make sure we all understood his point. When he makes eye contact with me his eyes squint and his scowl lines become more prominent.
