Lucian's POV

Sweeten the deal? I didn't know about sweetness but I couldn't get the bitter taste out of my mouth. How did she know about my goal? How did she know about the single thing I worked painstakingly hard for day and night? Was she bluffing? Didn't seem like it. If anything she looked more confident than ever before, like she knew she had me.

"How do you know about it?" I questioned her, trying to keep my unease under control. If she knew about it then who else also did?

"Nobody other than me is privy to your little secret." She said answering my unasked question. "As to the other thing, I am the Dean of Vox Nevestra. There is very little that I don't know. Now, are you willing to take the job? Or should I start looking for a replacement?" She joked.

There was so much I still didn't know but something told me that it was better to accept this deal than to reject it. But first things first.

"Do you promise that when the time comes you will use all available resources to help me out?"

"I give you my solemn oath that when the time comes all resources at my disposal are yours."

"Okay. Then, I accept the job."

"Excellent! I knew you would not disappoint me."

"Disappoint, what a word choice" I mused as I thought about how she knew about everything that mattered in my life.

"Also, Lucian," She said pulling me out of my thoughts, "Atalie must never know that you are trying to be friends with her simply because I asked you too keep an eye on her. Let her believe that you are making friends with her because you find her intresting enough to be your friend. If she finds out about our deal then everything is off and let me make it clear, you will spend the rest of your life working towards your goal but will be unable to achieve it." She threatened.

The Dean of Vox Nevestra never threatened anybody. The situation must already be dire for her to resprt to such means.

"Do you understand?" She asked in the cool, collected voice of hers.

"I do." I replied, just as cold. The truth was that no matter what you felt about the person in front of you, you always had to present a facade that their behaviour barely ruffled your feathers even when said behaviour made you want to kill the person. It was something that was drilled into me ever since I was old enough to remember.

For the first time since she asked me to keep an eye on Atalie I saw her smile. But she quickly killed and excused me.

*************************
I walked back to my dorm room still lost in my thoughts. I couldn't believe that the Dean of all people had asked me for a favour that was so weird it was ridiculous. Then again, it was the kind of favour one would expect the Dean of Vox Nevestra to ask.

One thing I couldn't understand was, why the Dean had asked me to keep an eye on Atalie. There were multiple talented mages around. Some were from families so influential that the Dean's connections looked like a toddler's attempt at networking. Case in point: me. The McKnight family had connections to God-alone-knew-what places. My father had his finger in every information pie, legal or otherwise.

The fact that despite all of this the Dean wanted me to look after Atalie was an interesting point, but it was one I couldn't question, at least not now. I was already panicked–bordering on desperate– enough to quickly do my job. If something happened to her.............. I quickly fisted my hand. No, nothing would happen to her! I won't let her be with that tyrant for any longer than absolutely necessary, even if I had to sell my soul to the devil to achieve it.

All of these thoughts swirled around in my brain as I entered my dorm's sitting room to discover my two idiots/best friends watching something on their phone.

"No no dammit! You got to kill him or he will betray you." Maxon yelled. His twin Mason was a little more composed but still his leg was bouncing like crazy which happened every time he watched a particular movie, Destructive Forces. Yippee!!

"What are you two idiots doing?" I asked. They both let out a tiny squeal as they whirled around to face me.

"Lucian! You scared us! I almost thought that Diego was here to kidnap us!" Mason accused.
Diego was the super villian in Destructive Forces, who was supercharged with the heart of Alfi and had conquered the world.

I leaned over and saw the scene on which the movies was paused. Princess Lea drawing the powers of the Heart into herself while Merlin–the movie hero–protected her. No wonder.

"By the way, where were you? Breakfast has already begun." Mason asked as I kept my guitar on the couch.

"Just a personal errand." I replied nonchalantly. The Dean had made it clear that I wasn't supposed to breathe a word to Atalie and I wasn't sure if it applied to my friends as well. But there was no way I was taking that risk.

"Now, shall we head to breakfast?"

Mission: Keep an eye on Atalie had just begun.

Why do you think the Dean is so interested in Atalie?

Also who is the 'she' Lucian keeps on mentioning?

Is there more to this than meets the eye?
