Chapter 13: Part 2

Atalie's POV

"We are about to begin our potion brewing class with the Hypnos potion. Now, who can tell me what the Hypnos potion can do?"

I was thinking about just that when a hand went up in one of the corners of the class.
"Yes?", Professor Christos gestured for the girl -who had raised her hand- to answer.

"Well, Hypnos is the Greek god of sleep. So, I'm guessing that the Hypnos potion puts you to sleep." She answered.

"Yes, you are absolutely correct. The Hypnos potion is one of the easiest potions one can create. Generally speaking, controlled amounts of the Hypnos potion are used to cure sleeplessness and/or insomnia.

Now, before any of you get any 'creative' ideas, it is my duty to inform you that the professors here are well versed on the symptoms of the Hypnos potion. So any pranks will result in nothing other than a punishment. My sincerest apologies to you for spoiling any future attempts at getting class cancelled."

There was faint laughter at what he had said and the tone in which he had said it.

"I'm not joking. Every year we have a few -shall we say- determined students who believe that they are doing a favour to their fellow students and their professors by getting class cancelled. Therefore, keep this warning in mind before you decide to do something that is foolhardy."

I felt like laughing. I guess everywhere you go, students are much the same!

"We require only 4 ingredients to make the Hypnos potion. Keep in mind, it is one of the simplest potions to brew but the measurements of the ingredients is key. If you mess up the proportion of an ingredient then Lord Almighty alone is privy to what you shall create.

Let us begin, shall we? Now, the first thing to do is fill your cauldron to the three forth with water. Always remember, water will make the base of any potion unless explicitly stated otherwise. Can anyone tell me why this is so?"

Seeing all our empty faces, he sighed and spoke, "What is the primary ability of water?" Again, all he was greeted by was empty faces.

"The primary ability of water is the fact that it can change into many different forms and is only liquid capable of storing large amounts of magical energy inside it. It is this ability that we use when creating potions."

No sooner did he speak than a hand went up from one of the students. Upon receiving the professor's permission, the student asked, "You said that we use water until explicitly told so. So does that mean, there are other liquids that can be used?"

"A very astute question! And to answer that, yes, other liquids can also be used. However no other liquid can come close to storing the amount that water can. The closest second that comes in is blood but, any potions using blood as it's base have been banned. This is because, blood is highly temperamental and as a result, any potion created using blood as it's base is very unstable and dangerous to both the creator and the user."

I felt a chill in the air when he told us this fact. I couldn't help but imagine what a potion with blood may look and taste like. Luckily, the professor stopped my train of thought with his next words.

"But you have no need to worry about a blood potion being given to you because you are as safe here as can be. Now, let's get back to our class. After the base you need three more ingredients to make the potion. If brewed correctly, the Hypnos potion is tasteless and colourless."

I noticed he didn't say odorless. I raised my hand and the professor stared at me for a quick second before telling me to ask my question. "Professor, I noticed you did not say anything about smell."

"Pardon me?", he asked

"Professor, when you said that the Hypnos potion is tasteless and colourless, you did not say anything about its smell."

"A very astute observation. I didn't say it's odorless because it has a very sweet aroma. The kind that makes you want to stop and just sniff at it all day.", he explained.

I nodded understanding. It made perfect sense. Everything had to have a flaw.

"Anyway, coming back to the point, to brew the potion, you first need to fill three-fourths of your cauldron with water. Once the water comes to a boil, you will add three and a half petals of the Dreamshade flower." He said, showing us a gorgeous golden flower. As soon as he added the petals in, the water beacme nice and golden with a hint of thickness.

"As you can see, the water has become golden, which means that it has absorbed all the energy of the petals. This is when our next ingredient goes in. The Errondale leaves are an important ingredient because of what they contribute to the potion. Can anyone tell me what exactly is the contribution of the Errondale leaves?"

This time it was the girl beside me, Raquel who spoke, "Professor, Errondale leaves help in relaxation and making a person feel like they are very tired. When such a combination of symptoms occur in normal life, a person falls asleep almost immediately. To recreate this effect we use Errondale leaves in the potion."

"Very good! Your explanation is absolutely right. Errondale leaves help in making sure that your target quickly falls asleep. Now, you put 5 big and green leaves into the mixture. Mind you, choose only the freshest leaves or your potion may not have the desired effect."

We watched as the mixture turned a bubbling green. The whole thing gave me the 'witch brewing the potion' vibes. After a few minutes he turned off the flames and faced us.

"This mixture is now complete. We will turn off the flames and add our final ingredient to complete the potion." In his hand was a weird looking liquid. He tipped the small bottle holding the liquid and emptied into the cauldron. I saw the potion turn colourless and a sweet aroma began wafting from it.

"The liquid I just poured in was liquid Silverbane. It helps dull the senses of your target to prevent them from breaking their sleep. With this our potion is now complete. You will recreate the entire potion with the help of your partner." Saying this, the ingredients came floating from the back storage and landed on our tables. It appeared that Professor Christos was a Dual.

Raquel turned to me and said, "Ready to do this?" I nodded and began. In fifteen minutes our potion was ready. Professor Christos came to our table when he saw that our potion was ready.

I turned to him and was just about to say something when he suddenly shouted, "Lord Almighty! Everyone get out of here!"
