Hyunjin ran his hand over the water, wishing he could take his mask off and see all the little fish swimming around.

He couldn't.

He'd already condemned too many innocent animals to a fate of stone, so his eyes always remained covered. He knew the area in which he lived in very well, having been living there for nearly one hundred years.

The walls were stone, the remnants of the large town that had once populated this area, now sunken deep into the ground. The round opening from which sunlight filtered had thick vines hanging down which, at one point early into his cursed life, he had used to leave his home. Now they were simply decoration, he was truly isolated. In the center was a large pond of water, perfect for bathing, relaxing, washing the same clothes he's always worn, etc.

An area in the far back was covered in a thick layer of moss which he used as a bed, wrapping himself in all the clothing he owned on winter nights when the biting cold attempted to end his endless life. He hummed quietly, basking in the summer sun that filtered into his home.

He was better off than he could ever hope to be, given his situation, but still unhappy. He wished for freedom from this wretched life while others wished for the "freedom" of immortality.

How this all came to be is truly a sad story.

His entire life he had devoted himself to Athena. Gods above, he loved her. Adored her. Worshipped her. She never showed to him any sign that she heard his prayers, accepted his offerings, or appreciated his work. But he loved her all the same. He would have happily continued to worship her with silence being his only reward, but fate deemed it to not be so.

Poseidon, god of the sea, and Athena's enemy, spoke to him in her stead. He expressed great interest in him and tried to make a move on him. He refused, running to her temple for security. He raped Hyunjin. The entire time he begged Athena for assistance, but he never got an answer.

Once Poseidon had gotten his fill, Athena finally made herself known. She said he had disgraced her. He, the victim was to blame. She cursed him.

She vowed that no one could see his beautiful eyes without turning to stone. She turned his beautiful hair into snakes. She made him immortal. Unable to die, only able to kill. He would only be able to die when someone truly fell in love with him. She knew it was impossible. That no one could ever love such a hideous monster.

He hated it.

After too many years, he realized it was hopeless.

He's snapped back to reality by the snap of a twig from above him. Uneven, stumbling footsteps reached his ears before someone let out a piercing scream followed by a thud. Someone had fallen into his home.

Hyunjin freezes, not knowing what to do. Should he run? Would they try to kill him? Were they injur-

"H-Hello?" The voice belongs to a man, but it's gentle, and scared.

"What are you doing here?" Hyunjin asks, trying to remain calm.

"I'm sorry, but I don't even know where here is." He takes a heavy breath, voice wavering. "M-My family abandoned me, and I don't know where I am."
