The scene was tranquil and serene as I lay in my bed, with the warmth of the fireplace casting a cozy glow in my chambers. My loyal maid, Mistress Seymour, was sound asleep on the pallet next to me. Suddenly, a soft knock on the door disrupted the peaceful ambiance. I stirred from my slumber and instructed Jane, my chambermaid, to attend to the person at the door.
"Jane, wake up! Go see who is knocking on my door at this late hour!" I commanded. Jane, who was wrapped in a shawl due to the chilly temperature, got up and headed towards the door. She waited for a response, and after a while, a call came from behind the thick oak door, startling me with the news that my sister's wedding was scheduled to take place that night.
I was taken aback by the unexpected announcement and quickly called for Jane's assistance to get dressed appropriately. We rushed to the chapel, where the groom, my sister, along with my father and stepmother, Anne, were all waiting. They appeared tired and slightly annoyed, which made me wonder what was going on.
Anne leaned over and whispered to me, filling me in on the reason for the hasty wedding. "Edward and Mary's wedding is happening quickly because of an uprising in the north," she whispered. Her words made me feel uneasy, but I chose to keep my thoughts to myself, as it was not my place to interfere in political matters.
As I watched Mary become Mary Seymour, nee Tudor, Duchess of Hertford, my father wished her good luck on her honeymoon and reminded her of her duty to ensure that the people of the north knew their place. It was evident that the situation was complicated, and I wondered how Mary would manage to navigate it.
"Stepmother, do you think Mary will be able to win the hearts of the people of the North and make them turn their love back to father?" I asked, trying to make sense of the situation. Anne, who seemed to be lost in thought, sighed and looked at me before turning her gaze towards William and Elizabeth, who were playing with a ball. Elizabeth was more interested in playing with the ball, while William watched and giggled.
"I hope so, but with her marriage to Edward being known now, logic shall soothe the people of the North, as she is now married and will likely have children of her own," spoke Anne softly. Her words made sense, but I couldn't help but feel worried about the future.
Furthermore, Anne revealed to me that she was expecting another child, which meant that I would soon have another sibling. I was happy to hear the news, but I couldn't help but express my concern about Anne's health.
"I am pleased to hear such news, stepmother, but are you sure it is wise to be with a child so soon after Will's birth? I do not know much about motherhood yet," I asked, hoping to comfort her. Anne smiled at me warmly, and I could tell that my concern had touched her.
Overall, it was a night filled with mixed emotions, and I couldn't wait to retire to my chambers and ponder over the events that had taken place.
