The specimen and it's alternate universe counterparts are usually male. Allegedly the very first was a plain male kappa, a water spirit yokai. But the specimen began evolving at an alarming rate, shifting into different species and slipping into different worlds entirely, these worlds know as 'AU's'.

In some of the altered universes the subject was human, in some he remained a kappa. The specimen had a soul mate, their love changing and shifting into every new universe they explored together. Two halves to a whole, like yin and yang.

Without his beloved partner, Shima would go on an emotional rampage through every dimension he shifted into, so it was clear that his liver was the only thing stabilizing him.
