(The New Mates)
The assembly was over. The so-called seniors departed. Few out of the room while few joined Patrick as he walked down the stage. I stood and moved out of the row while Brenda followed me. I didn’t know much about her and she always following me bothered me but at that moment she was the only one I knew and that part about her brought some sense of security as well. I stood little away from the rows. Brenda was first one to speak,
“What’s next now?”
“I don’t know. Do we have anything in our hands anymore? We lost our right to make choices.” I actually didn’t know if I even possessed anything anymore. “Ready to go.” Patrick stood right in front of us. “Go where?” Brenda asked. “Your new place where you stay. Now please follow me.” I and Brenda looked at each other. Of course, we couldn’t refuse. He walked before we could respond and we simply followed him. We were again back to that dimly lit corridor. Few people were talking but strangely, as we were passing through, they started staring at us, as if we were someone very strange. We kept moving as people looked at us and went back talking as we fully passed them. I and Brenda followed Patrick uncomfortably through those gazes. Walking through the hall way we took two right turns then a left then again a right in a hotel-like corridor until we reached a door 1001. He opened the door and gestured us to move in. I and Brenda walked in the room. Patrick entered switching the lights on. As I walked in, I saw sofa lay at the left of the room along with a pair of bean bags. There were four bunker beds two at right and two at left at the end of the room with a desk and chair beside each bunker bed. There was a door at right which seemed to be the way to the washroom.
“This place doesn’t seem like inside the train.” Brenda said investigating the room.
“There’s a reason why we call this a magical place. Settle yourself, few more humans will be here soon.” informed patrick.
“Few humans?” I asked.
“Well yes, you two can’t be living in this big room all alone, right?”
“Got it.”
I sighed while I turned my back towards him as I heard the door close. I turned to ensure if he was out. Now just me and Brenda stood in the room. Brenda started moving around the room again investigating the sofa, then went towards the bed. I walked over towards the desk where I pulled the drawer. There laid a few papers, magazines, and few more stationary stuffs like pen, pencil, staplers.
“So, we will be choosing the beds or they assign us?” Brenda asked.
“I don’t know, let’s just wait until our so-called roommates arrives” I responded as I was back checking the drawer.
Before I could allow my hands to discover more in the drawer, I heard a knock at the door. I turned as I had an eye contact with Brenda trying to figure out who it could be.
“Maybe our roommates” Brenda said before I could say anything.
The door opened wide as the same screaming guy back from the auditorium was being dragged in by his friends. They entered and the door closed behind them. The tall frustrated man walked past me huff and puff and sat on the left corner bunker bed. I looked at him, irritated and cursing the luck, maybe i had a feeling that I might not like him afterall.
“Hey, I’m Stella Clarke.” A blue-eyed brown hair girl with fair skin tone spoke. Offering her hand for a handshake towards me.
“Ervin Roberts” I hesitated but took the handshake. Then she offered her hand towards Brenda and she took it, “Brenda Hart”
Then she took a small pause before pointing towards another fair man approximately my height “This is my brother Lorenzo.” she shifted towards another man, “This is Dante.” then she finally moved towards the only other girl then her “This is Adeline.”
“And him…” Brenda said softly pointing at the angry guy who seemed to be zoned out. “He’s Tristan. Please don’t mind him, he is a little off.”
“Well, who isn’t he just can’t cope up with his decisions.” Taunted Dante on which Tristan angrily rose from his bed and started marching towards Dante “Oh what, say that again, it was me huh?” Tristan grunted
“Please don’t start again now.” Adeline said walking in the space between the two furious guys to stop their fight.
“Guys we don’t have time to fight with each other! This is the time to fight the situation along each other.” said Stella. “Uhm…” Brenda hesitated to speak further and looked at me as if asking for approval. I slightly winked in approval as she continued “I think we should stay a little calm, first let’s designate the beds now to not lead any other further arguments.”
“Agreed” said Adeline. Tristan turned and walked back towards his bed as he sat informing “This one’s mine.” And he simply laid on the bed.
“Woah, you settled really fast didn’t ya.” Brenda mocked but realized instantly, “Uhm… sorry.” She walked toward the first bunker bed at right “Let this one’s be ours.” Brenda said holding the stair railing of the bed. 'Ours?' I thought. I went to the bed and sat at the lower bed. “Alright then, let the bed in front of you be mine and Stella’s,” said Adeline. “Cool, we both take the left bed.” TUCK! With that noise, the lights were out. “Damn is it sleeping time or dying?” a voice came. “I assume we should rather be sleeping Lorenzo, I really am not looking forward to know if your second option is true.”
“Agreed” I heard the voice going from right to left which I assumed them heading towards their bed while I felt Brenda climbing up to upper bunker bed. I leaned on my back, awake. The lights were out but after sometime, my eyes adjusted with the darkness as I stared at blank. Wondering. It felt like it was just a day ago I was in the real world where I was just working in my office and after that moving aimlessly here and there wondering about ava. Ava…. I realized I haven’t thought about her for a while, maybe the longest while since she was gone… yeah… gone… the reason I’m here. Av- “You asleep?” Brenda asked. I looked at her, she was peeking down from upper bed. “Nope.” I replied. “Sleeping is a hard shit in here.” Said by a girl, maybe it was Adeline. “Agreed!” shouted Stella. Brenda said nothing and simply turned back to sleep. I hated them jumping in our conversation but at some point, it even gave me the feeling i wasnt alone, maybe. I stared at the bed holders on top of me laying on my back and didn’t even realize when the sleep took over me.
