Although the ride from the house to the office was only 15 minutes, it felt much longer. We stayed silent the entire time. As we drove together, my thoughts drifted. I found myself watching her, wondering what kind of girl she really was. She irritates me, yet I keep doing things for her I’ve never done for anyone else.
I don’t know what she’s doing to me, but whatever it is, I don’t like it. She’s pulling me out of my shell, and I need to fight these feelings.
I have to stay strong. When we got to the coffee shop, I asked her to step out of the car and get me some coffee.
“Sarah, go get me my coffee,” I said.
I used that as an excuse to avoid taking her to the office, I didn’t want anyone knowing we rode in together or that she stayed over at my place.
As soon as she stepped out and headed into the coffee shop, I told my driver to leave for the office. It wasn’t far, so she could walk the rest of the way herself.
When I arrived at work, I headed straight to my office. The moment I stepped in, everyone carried themselves more formally, my presence always seemed to bring a certain order to the place.
My secretary approached me with details about a new contract proposal and a meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
I could already tell the week was going to be hectic. I walked into my office while she was still talking, and once she finished, I handed her some paperwork to pass on to Sarah, my new intern.
I could have given it to Sarah myself, but I chose to have my secretary deliver it instead.
About twenty minutes after my secretary left, Sarah walked in with my coffee in hand. She set it on the table, and I took a small sip—then immediately spat it out. There was no sugar, and it wasn’t even hot.
I told her I always take my coffee with sugar and sent her back to get another one, fully aware of how stressful it would be. I found myself enjoying every second of irritating her—you should see the look on her face when she’s angry. I don’t like being nice to her.
I smiled as she walked out of my office.
I went back to work, and within fifteen minutes she was back. When she returned, I told her to leave it on the desk; she did and walked out.
No sooner had she left than I heard a knock on my door. “Come in,” I said. It was my secretary.
“Yes, what can I do for you?” I asked.
“Sir, I’m here to remind you about the meeting in two minutes,” she said.
“Two minutes?” I exclaimed. “I completely forgot I had a meeting today,” I muttered.
“Thanks, Jane—I almost missed it,” I said. “I’ll be there shortly; let me just gather what I need.”
“Alright, sir,” Jane replied before walking away. I quickly got my things together and headed out of the office for the meeting.
